Leonard Wins 150th Game At Middlebury As Panthers Slip Past Union 12-10

The Middlebury baseball team kicked off the week with a victory, slipping past Union 12-10 in a back-and-forth affair on Monday evening. The victory was Mike Leonard's 150th win as the Panthers' head coach.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Garnet Chargers jumped ahead early as Caleb Miller lofted a two-run homer over the left field fence to give the visitors a 2-0 edge in the top of the first.
  • Middlebury cut the deficit in half (2-1) in the bottom of the third. Mitchell Schroeder singled to right and advanced to third on an errant throw before coming home on a fielder's choice by Lucas Flemming.
  • The Panthers wasted no time tying the game in the fourth, as Sammy Smith ripped the first pitch of the frame over the wall in left to make it 2-2.
  • Union moved back in front in the top of the fifth as Liam McIlroy led off with a home run to left center. Later in the inning, with runners on first and second, Miller lined a single to center which plated a run before a sacrifice fly by Kyle Zaslaw brought the score to 5-2.
  • The hosts roared in front in the bottom of the frame, scoring five runs. Schroeder opened the inning with a roundtripper to left center. Baker Angstman and Flemming followed with back-to-back base hits, before a single by Zip Malley plated Angstman to pull within one (5-4). Smith was next up, crushing a towering homer down the left field line to give Middlebury a 7-5 advantage.
  • The Garnet Chargers restored their lead in the sixth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Sebastian Pike lashed a double off the wall in left field to score two and knot the contest at 7-7. One batter later, Zaslaw scampered home on a passed ball to take a one run edge (8-7).
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Panthers regained the lead as Schroeder blasted his second home run of the day to left center, giving Middlebury a 9-8 advantage.
  • The hosts extended the lead to three in the seventh. David Byrne doubled to left center and crossed home plate on a run-scoring single by Beau Root. One batter later, Chris Borter laced a base hit to left which brought in Root for the 11-8 lead.
  • Union tallied two runs in the eighth to pull within one, but Flemming answered with a booming roundtripper to left in the bottom of the frame as the Panthers held on for the 12-10 triumph.
NOTES
  • Smith's two home runs were his fifth and sixth of the season, hitting three in his last three games. With today's roundtrippers, Smith moves into third in the Middlebury program record books with 17 career homers.
