The ninth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team recorded a hard-fought 5-4 decision over Colby in the regular-season finale for both teams. With the win, the Panthers have claimed four-straight triumphs headed into the NESCAC Tournament.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Mules grabbed the first point with an 8-3 triumph at #1 doubles.
- Middlebury leveled the match at 1-1 when the tandem of Nina Farhat and Ananya Annapantula slipped past their opponents 8-6 in the third slot.
- The duo of Claudia Miller and Gena Huang claimed three of the final four games at #2, turning a 5-5 tie into an 8-6 win to give the Panthers a 2-1 advantage.
- Middlebury gained a 3-1 lead when Amy Delman eased past her opponent at #5 by scores of 6-2 and 6-3.
- The Mules pulled to within one (3-2) with a straight-set victory in the top spot of the lineup (6-4, 6-2), followed by a 7-5, 6-0 triumph at #4 to even the contest at 3-3.
- The Panthers regained a narrow 4-3 edge when Charlotte McCann dropped just one game in straight sets at #6 (6-0, 6-1).
- At #2, Lulu Wu and her opponent split the first two sets, both going to tiebreakers. Wu earned a 7-6 (5) decision in the initial set but dropped the second frame 7-6 (3). Wu clinched the match for the visitors with a 6-3 decision in the third for a 5-3 Middlebury lead.
- Colby secured the point at #3 for the final 5-4 score.
NOTES
- Delman tallied her seventh-straight individual win, improving to 9-1 during league competition.
- McCann recorded her sixth triumph in a row.
- Wu picked up her team-leading 18th win (18-5) in singles play this spring, including a solid 6-2 record at #2.
- The programs played for the 28th time with Middlebury holding a 24-4 advantage. The Panthers have won each of the last 20 meetings dating back to 1997.
Middlebury returns to action next weekend when it competes in the conference tournament. The seedings and matchups will be announced in the upcoming days by the NESCAC office.
