#11 Men’s Tennis Stuns #16 Amherst With 9-0 Triumph

The 11th-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team secured a crucial victory at Amherst on Sunday afternoon, sweeping the 16th-ranked Mammoths 9-0.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers took a 3-0 lead following doubles play. The duo of Robby Ward and Neel Epstein cruised to an 8-2 victory in the top spot for the initial point of the match.
  • The tandem of Thehan Wijemanne and Hugh Hentschel claimed a back-and-forth battle at #2, winning 8-7 (3) to extend the advantage to 2-0, before Julian Wu and Aidan Harris earned an 8-5 win in the third slot to make it 3-0.
  • Middlebury continued to pull away in singles action. Noah Lewis eased to a straight-set victory (6-4, 6-1) at #6 to increase the advantage to 4-0.
  • Ward clinched the match for the visitors, securing a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at #3. 
  • Noah Laber dropped the first set 6-3, but responded by winning the next two sets 6-1, 6-4 to make it 6-0 in the top slot.
  • The final three victories came from Epstein (6-1, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (7)) at #4, Harris (6-2, 3-6, 6-4) at #5 and Wu (4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7)) at #2 to complete the sweep for the Panthers.
NOTES
  • Harris picked up his 40th career singles win, while Laber earned the 35th triumph of his career and Ward secured his 45th victory in navy and white.
  • Hentschel's win during doubles was his 20th of the season.
  • Epstein continues his sensational spring as he has now won 12-consecutive matches. Lewis is currently riding an eight-match winning streak, with both Panthers remaining unbeaten during spring play.
  • Prior to the match, Middlebury, Amherst and Williams had identical 6-1 records atop of the NESCAC standings. With the victory, the Panthers now sit at 7-1 in conference play. 
  • The programs met for the 71st time in a series that began in 1926.
Middlebury returns home next weekend to take on #7 Bowdoin on Saturday at noon and Colby on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in a pair of crucial NESCAC contests.
