#8 Men’s Tennis Outlasts #6 Bowdoin 6-3

The eighth-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team took an early 3-0 lead following doubles play and did not look back, outlasting sixth-ranked Bowdoin for the 6-3 victory on Saturday afternoon.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The duo of Hugh Hentschel and Thehan Wijemanne got things going for the Panthers, cruising to an 8-3 win in the second slot. 
  • Julian Wu and Aidan Harris increased the host's advantage just two minutes later with an 8-4 triumph at #3.
  • The tandem of Neel Epstein and Robby Ward completed the doubles sweep for Middlebury. Trailing 5-4, the pair rattled off four of the next five games to claim an 8-6 win and make it 3-0 heading into singles action.
  • Harris pushed the Panther lead to 4-0 with a straight-set victory (6-3, 6-2) at #5. 
  • The Polar Bears got on the board with a triumph in the top spot, but Epstein clinched the match, easing past his opponent 6-4, 6-3 to give the hosts a 5-1 advantage.
  • Bowdoin closed to within two (5-3), earning a superbreaker win at #3 and a back-and-forth, three-set victory at #6.
  • In the second slot, Wu closed the show with a hard-fought three-set triumph. The Panther cruised to a 6-0 win in the first set before falling 4-6 in the second. Even at 6-6 in the final set, Wu rushed past his opponent 7-1 in the tiebreaker to secure the 6-3 victory.
NOTES
  • Epstein continues his strong form this spring, increasing his winning streak to 13-straight singles matches. Epstein also won his 15th doubles contest of the year during the triumph.
  • Ward claimed his 10th doubles win of the season.  
  • The programs played for the 53rd time with Middlebury holding a 35-18 advantage in an all-time series that began in 1934. The Panthers have won six of the last seven meetings
  • Middlebury has won six-straight matches, with each of those coming against conference opponents.
The Panthers are back at home on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. when they host Colby for Senior Day.
