Panthers Ground Cardinals With 14-5 Triumph

The Middlebury baseball team had four multi-hit innings en route to a 14-5 triumph over Plattsburgh State on Tuesday afternoon.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers took a 1-0 edge in the first when Mitchell Schroeder singled to right center to drive in Beau Root.
  • The Cardinals responded in their half of the inning. Ben Catrambone scampered home on a groundout by Aidan Diltz, before a hard knock up the middle from Daniel Novelli drove in a pair of runs for the 3-1 lead.
  • In the third, Middlebury deadlocked the contest at 3-3. A sacrifice fly by Kyle McCausland sent David Byrne across the plate, before Root scored on a groundout from Chris Borter.
  • The Panthers took a 4-3 edge in the fifth when Root touched the plate on a groundout.
  • During the sixth inning, singles by Sammy Smith and Nathan Samii plated  a trio of Middlebury runs for a 7-3 advantage. 
  • In their next at-bat, a throwing error allowing Borter to touch home plate, before Smith and Baker Angstman scored on a double to right field by Samii to increase the lead to 10-3.
  • Plattsburgh State got one run back in the bottom of the seventh when Diltz blasted the ball through the left side allowing Conner Gonzalski to cross home plate. 
  • Schroeder blasted his team-leading sixth roundtripper of the season in the eighth, driving in three, before Gus Parker scampered home on a sacrifice fly from Smith for the 14-4 lead.
  • A single to left by Gonzalski gave the Cardinals the final run of the game to make it 14-5. 
NOTES
  • Today's game was the second meeting between the teams this season, with Middlebury leveling the series at 1-1 on the year. The Panthers own a 12-5 overall mark against Plattsburgh State.
Middlebury returns to Forbes Field to host Amherst in a weekend series beginning on Friday evening at 4:00 p.m.
