Baseball Drops Tightly-Contested 4-2 Matchup Against Amherst

The Middlebury baseball team opened a NESCAC West weekend set against Amherst with a tightly-contested 4-2 loss on Friday evening.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers moved ahead in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Kyle McCausland ripped a double to right field before Mitchell Schroeder sent the first pitch he saw back up the middle to plate his teammate and make it 1-0.
  • The Mammoths leveled the score at 1-1 in the top of the third. Tyler McCord singled to right, moved to second on a wild pitch and scampered to third on a groundout. Jack Sampedro brought McCord home with a base hit that skipped through the right side.
  • Middlebury regained the lead in the fifth. Gus Parker reached on an Amherst miscue before Beau Root put runners on first and second with a bunt single. Chris Borter followed with a fielder's choice before McCausland roped a base hit to left to bring Root home and give the hosts a 2-1 edge.
  • The Mammoths responded with a run of their own in the sixth. Jack McDermott launched a two-out double to the wall in left center. Ryan McIntyre was next up, knocking a single to left which plated McDermott and tied the game.
  • In the eighth, the visitors pulled ahead. With runners on second and third, Sampedro reached on a fielder's choice which allowed one run to cross home plate. McDermott followed with another fielder's choice to score arun and give Amherst a 4-2 lead.
  • The Panthers put runners in scoring position in the final frame, but were unable to knot the contest as Sampedro tallied two strikeouts and a groundout to secure the 4-2 victory.
NOTES
  • Root registered three hits, including two doubles and a bunt single during the contest.
  • On the mound, Owen Tross pitched 7.1 innings for the hosts, striking out three batters and walking just one.
