Middlebury Falls 6-4 To Williams In NESCAC West Series Finale

The Middlebury baseball team held a 4-1 lead midway through Sunday's NESCAC West contest with Williams, but the Ephs scored the final five runs for a 6-4 win at Forbes Field. The Panthers won each of Saturday's games to take the weekend series 2-1.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The contest remained scoreless until the fourth when the visitors manufactured a run. Marcus Burrell led off with a single to center field and moved to second when Mike Giove walked. The pair of runners were sacrificed to second and third on a bunt before Andrew Lods grounded out to score Burrell for a 1-0 edge.
  • The Panthers answered with four tallies of their own in the bottom of the frame. Baker Angstman knotted the contest at 1-1 with a single through the right side to bring in Mitchell Schroeder who walked. Nathan Samii gave the hosts a 2-1 advantage with an RBI groundout, followed by a two-run single to left by Gus Parker that drove home Angstman and Zip Malley who induced a base on balls for a 4-1 lead.
  • The Ephs cut the deficit to one (4-3) in the sixth, scoring on an RBI groundout by Lods and a base hit to right field from Kedar Veeraswamy to score Ryan Nakajima.
  • Williams took its first lead with a pair of runs in its next at-bat. Giove lifted a sacrifice fly to right to plate Henry Juan, while Nakajima followed with an RBI single through the right side for a 5-4 edge.
  • The visitors pushed their advantage to 6-4 in the eighth when Owen McHugh rolled a single up the middle as Andrew Rocha raced home after walking and stealing second.
  • Middlebury threatened in the eighth when Schroeder reached on an error and Andrew Ashley walked, but McHugh worked out of the jam as the Ephs hung on for the 6-4 victory.
NOTES
  • The Panthers had a pair of winning streaks come to an end. Middlebury saw its nine-game overall streak and its seven-game home run snapped.
  • Sunday's contest marked the 136th meeting between the programs in a series that began in 1901. The Panthers have won seven of the last nine meetings, including two on Saturday.
After an eight-game homestand, Middlebury hits the road for a Tuesday afternoon contest at Plattsburgh State. The first pitch with the Cardinals is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
