Baseball Rallies Past VTSU-Castleton 8-7 With Six-Run Ninth Inning

The Middlebury baseball team trailed 7-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, but tallied six runs, five of which came with two outs, to rally past Vermont State University Castleton 8-7 on Saturday afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Kyle McCausland ripped a single up the middle to bring Zip Malley home from second. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, a Spartan miscue allowed McCausland to score and make it 2-0.
  • Castleton evened the score in the following frame. With runners on second and third, Turner Clews singled up the middle to plate one run. Kannon Dush followed with a base hit to left which brought Clews across the plate to knot the contest at 2-2.
  • The Spartans stormed into a four-run advantage in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded, an errant throw allowed one run to cross the plate. Castleton added another tally during the next at bat as a groundout by Alex Bingham scored Hunter Perkins. Later in the inning, Mikey Raby Jr. lashed a single to left center which plated a pair of runners to bring the score to 6-2.
  • In the top of the ninth, Castleton tacked on another run to extend its lead to 7-2.
  • Trailing by five, Middlebury began its comeback rally. Nathan Samii reached on a Spartan miscue and moved to second on a passed ball. Lucas Flemming blasted a double off the left field wall to bring Samii across the plate. With two outs three batters later, Beau Root drove a base hit to center field which allowed Flemming to score and cut the deficit to three (7-4).
  • McCausland kept the comeback alive with a single to left, before Mitchell Schroeder launched a game-tying three-run homer over the left-field foul pole to level the score at 7-7.
  • Middlebury kept up the momentum, with Ben Slaughter reaching first on an errant throw. Pinch runner Gus Parker came in and swiped second base, before Andrew Ashley completed the astonishing comeback. The Panther drove in Parker with the game-winning RBI single to right field to give the hosts an 8-7 victory.
