Baseball Holds Off Keene State 4-3 In Home Opener

The Middlebury baseball team played its first game on the newly-renovated Forbes Field on Friday afternoon, holding off a late rally by Keene State to claim a 4-3 victory.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers pulled ahead in the bottom of the second when a groundout by Andrew Ashley brought Ben Slaughter across home plate. Later in the inning, with a runner on second, Lucas Flemming blasted a triple to deep right field to make it 2-0, before Chris Borter yanked a double down the left field line to score Flemming and give Middlebury a 3-0 lead.
  • The Owls responded with a run in the top of the third. Evan Cali led off with a bunt single and stole second. Tommy Ahlers followed with a base hit through the left side to put runners on the corners, before a groundout allowed Cali to score, making it 3-1.
  • In the bottom half of the frame, Slaughter answered for Middlebury, smashing a long home run to left center to extend the Panthers' lead to 4-2.
  • Keene State pulled to within one (4-3) in the top of the seventh when Shea Zina launched a two-run homer to left field.
  • That was as close as the Owls would get. Andrew Gatland shut down the visitors, recording the final six outs of the contest, allowing no runs and striking out four to secure the 4-3 triumph.
NOTES
  • With the win, head coach Mike Leonard earned his 128th victory at Middlebury, moving him into second place in program history.
  • Borter and Slaughter led the offensive output for the Panthers. Borter went three-for-three at the dish and tallied an RBI, while Slaughter recorded two hits and a run batted in.
Middlebury returns to Forbes Field on Saturday to take on in-state foe VTSU-Castleton at noon.
