Late Rally Propels #8 RPI Past #6 Middlebury 14-12

The sixth-ranked Middlebury men's lacrosse team led #8 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for a majority of the contest, but a late fourth-quarter rally lifted the Engineers past the hosts 14-12.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers opened the scoring with 1:06 elapsed. William Ryan received a pass from Tom Conley and fired his shot into the top-right corner for a 1-0 edge.
  • Billy Curtis found the back of the net just 30 seconds later, before adding another tally with 11:28 showing on the clock to make it 3-0.
  • The Engineers answered with a long-ranged goal by Sean Smith at the 6:13 mark, but Cooper DeMallie ripped a bouncing shot into the bottom-left corner to give Middlebury a 4-1 advantage heading into the second quarter.
  • The teams traded tallies over the opening 9:20 of the second stanza. Russell Thorndike and Patrick Jamin each recorded a goal for the Panthers, while Tyler Ruffini and Luke Murphy scored for RPI to make it 6-3 with 6:40 left in the half.
  • Middlebury extended its lead to five (8-3) with a pair of tallies over the next 3:34 of action. Ryan brilliantly dodged a defender and bounced a close-range shot past Engineer goalie Joseph Perry with 5:44 to go, before Curtis completed his hat trick at the 3:06 mark.
  • RPI closed the opening half with a goal by Erik Ojert to cut the deficit  to four (8-4) heading into the locker room.
  • The visitors began the third quarter with two unanswered goals to pull within 8-6, before a nifty player-up tally by Will Zink made it 9-6 with 8:02 to go.
  • Just 1:17 later, Thorndike tacked on the Panthers' 10th goal, rifling a shot across his body and into the bottom-left corner.
  • Ojert and DeMallie traded markers during the next 1:09  before a turnaround shot by Murphy cut the Middlebury lead to three (11-8) with one quarter to play.
  • The Engineers picked up where they left off to start the final frame, tallying three unanswered markers over the first 4:53 to knot the contest at 11 goals apiece.
  • With 9:38 left in the game, the Panthers restored their lead. Thorndike found Curtis on the doorstep and the forward managed to slip his shot past Perry to regain the advantage (12-11).
  • RPI evened the score at 12-12 with 5:41 remaining, as Murphy found the back of the net with a turnaround strike.
  • The Engineers continued to apply pressure and broke through inside the final two minutes, scoring twice to earn a 14-12 victory.
