#14 Women’s Tennis Earns 5-4 Road Victory Over #6 Williams

The 14th-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team earned a hard-fought upset victory over #6 Williams on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Panthers improve to 3-0 in NESCAC play.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The tandem of Nina Farhat and Lulu Wu opened the match by cruising to an 8-3 triumph in the third slot. 
  • At #2, Gena Huang and Claudia Miller battled past their opponents to extend the lead to 2-0 with a tightly-contested 8-6 victory, before the Ephs made it 2-1 with a win in the top spot.
  • In singles action, Miller (6-3, 6-1) and Huang (6-1, 6-2) each eased to triumphs in the third and fourth slots, respectively, to increase Middlebury's lead to 4-1. 
  • Williams managed the even the contest (4-4) after claiming straight-set wins at #1 and #5, as well as a come-from-behind victory in the second slot. 
  • The match came down to #6. Nathalie van der Reis dropped the first set 6-4, but followed it up with 6-4 and 6-1 score lines to clinch the decisive point and secure the 5-4 win for the Panthers.
NOTES
  • Van der Reis' victory was the 25th of her career.
  • The programs squared off for the 62nd time in the all-time series. With today's win, Middlebury has won five of the last seven matchups.
The Panthers are back in action next Sunday when they travel to Connecticut College for a 10:00 a.m. contest.
