Softball Opens NESCAC Play With Doubleheader Sweep Over Wesleyan

The Middlebury softball team opened NESCAC action on Saturday, taking both ends of a doubleheader over Wesleyan. The Panthers won the first game 8-1 and completed the sweep with a 7-3 triumph in the nightcap.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Cardinals looked to strike in the top of the third inning with a leadoff triple by Nicole Celi that clipped the right-field line. The Panthers worked out of the jam, as pitcher Jewel Ashbrook recorded the next three outs to keep the game scoreless.
  • In the bottom of the frame, Middlebury took the lead with four runs. The Panthers jumped ahead with a pair of runs on an error and doubled that advantage to 4-0 on a two-run base hit to right center off the bat of Megan Fox.
  • The Cardinals pulled to within three (4-1) in the top of the fifth. Isabella Secaria-Cotto drew a leadoff walk and came around to touch home on a double from Celi.
  • The Panthers exploded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Kristyn Carroll reached on a fielding miscue and Cate Viola walked. Fox followed with a towering, three-run roundtripper to left center for a 7-1 advantage. Kelley Dever beat out an infield single and scampered home on a double to left from Nina Schroeder for an 8-1 lead.
  • Wesleyan loaded the bases in the seventh, but Ashbrook got Waverly Smart to fly out for the 8-1 victory.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • In the nightcap, the visitors got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the second inning. Celi singled and Kelly Baker doubled before the duo raced around to score on a seeing-eye single through the left side by Smart for a 2-0 advantage.
  • The Panthers knotted the contest at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the third. Cece Ziegler singled up the middle to start the rally and Carroll reached a few batters later on an error. The pair touched home on a single down the left-field line from McKenna Lont.
  • Middlebury took the lead for good with a tally in the fourth. Olivia Scholes lifted her first career homer just over the right-field fence for a 3-2 edge. Ziegler followed with a base hit and raced all the way home on a line-drive double by Samantha Hausman that one-hopped the centerfield wall for a two-run advantage.
  • Wesleyan sliced the deficit to one (4-3) in the fifth. Smart legged out a double to left center before Lizzie Marino drove her in with a base knock to left center.
  • In the home half of the frame, Middlebury pushed its lead out to 5-3. Lont reached on a fielder's choice and scampered home on a double to right by Dever.
  • The Panthers continued to swing the hot bats, scoring twice in the sixth. Hausman walked and Carroll reached on a fielder's choice before Lont looped a double down the right-field line to push Hausman and Carroll across the plate for a 7-3 lead.
  • Lont set the Cardinals down in order in the seventh to complete the sweep.
