Baseball Surges To 14-7 Victory Over RPI In Midweek Action

The Middlebury baseball team scored nine unanswered runs over the first five innings of Wednesday's contest to propel it past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 14-7 in midweek action.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Beau Root led off with a single through the right side and stole second. After moving to third on a groundout, Root crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Mitchell Schroeder.
  • Middlebury tacked on two more runs in the second. With Andrew Ashley on second and Nathan Samii on first, the Panthers attempted a double steal. The throw from the catcher got away, allowing Ashley to come home and score, making it 2-0. Later in the inning, Gus Parker ripped a single up the middle to plate Samii to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • With the bases loaded in the third, the visitors continued to pull away. Chris Borter scored on a groundout to first base by Ashley before Samii roped a single to left field to bring home Kyle McCausland and Schroeder for a 6-0 advantage.
  • Middlebury added two more runs in the top of the fifth. Samii tallied his third and fourth RBI of the day, driving in McCausland and Schroeder with a double to right center. Lucas Flemming followed by plating Ashley with a sacrifice fly to make it 9-0.
  • The Engineers cut the deficit to seven (9-2), as a wild pitch and an errant throw allowed two runs to cross the plate.
  • The hosts continued their comeback bid in the sixth, pulling to within two (9-7). Julian Scarpa brought the score to 9-3 with an RBI base hit. Later with the bases loaded, Robbie Reddington brought all three runs in to score with a base-clearing single to right. Aidan Hicks capped the inning with an infield single which plated Reddington and made it a two-run contest.
  • That was as close as RPI would get. The Panthers increased their edge to three (10-7) in the eighth as Lucas Cai was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in a run. Root sealed the victory in the ninth, blasting a grand slam over the right-center field fence to give Middlebury the 14-7 triumph.
NOTES
  • Root and Samii led the way for the Panthers this afternoon, with each recording four RBIs, two hits and two runs.
  • With two hits today, Root also eclipsed the 100-hit mark for his career.
  • Parker tallied a team-high three hits, while also driving in a run.
  • The program's met for the 60th time with Middlebury holding a 33-27 edge in a series that began in 1907. The Panthers have won the last eight contests.
