Baseball Opens NESCAC West Action With 4-3 Loss At Hamilton

The Middlebury baseball team opened the 2024 NESCAC West slate with a 4-3 loss at Hamilton on Friday evening.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Continentals moved into a 3-0 lead in the first inning. A base hit by Michael Tallarida brought Taylor Kaufman across the plate to open the scoring, before a pair of runs scored on two wild pitches.
  • Hamilton added a run in the bottom of the third on a home run to right-center field by Jackson Sattinger.
  • The Panthers pulled to within one (4-3) in the top of the sixth. David Byrne led off by reaching on an error, before Gus Parker was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Beau Root was up next and reached via a Continental miscue which allowed Byrne to cross home plate and Parker to move to third. Chris Borter followed with a sacrifice fly that drove in Parker to make it 4-2 and advance Root to third.  Mitchell Schroeder drove home Root with an RBI groundout, bringing the score to 4-3. 
  • Middlebury threatened to even the contest in the final frame. With one out, Schroeder ripped a double down the left-field line, but Hamilton pitcher Jack Eshleman worked out of the jam to give the hosts the 4-3 triumph.
NOTES
  • This was the 76th meeting between the Panthers and the Continentals with Middlebury owning a decisive 57-19 advantage.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday for a NESCAC West doubleheader against Hamilton, with first pitch slated for noon.
