Baseball Splits Twinbill With #19 Kalamazoo

The Middlebury baseball team fell 5-2 in its opening game against #19 Kalamazoo, but came back to down the Hornets 15-3 in the nightcap. 
 
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers opened the scoring in the bottom of the third when Beau Root tripled to right-center field to bring home Gus Parker for the 1-0 edge.
  • Kalamazoo answered in the top of the fifth, when a pair of walks allowed a pair of Hornets to scamper across the plate for the 2-1 lead.
  • Lucas Flemming led off Middlebury's half of the inning with a solo homer to knot the contest at 2-2.
  • Kalamazoo took the lead for good in the sixth. Harrison Poeszat scored when Alex Fenkell reached on a fielder's choice, before a bunt by Luckas Bolton sent Tanner Hawkins home. Fenkell later crossed home plate on a single by Cam Kelly for the 5-2 victory.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers came out strong in the second contest, scoring nine runs in the opening trio of innings. Mitchell Schroeder got things going in the first, driving in Root with a single, before Chris Borter scampered across the plate on a fielder's choice by Kyle McCausland for the 2-0 edge.
  • In the second, Zip Malley scored on a groundout, a single by Root brought home Sammy Smith, before a double from Schroeder drove in both Borter and Root for the 6-0 advantage.
  • The Panthers increased their lead to 9-0 in the third inning. Malley singled to bring in Nathan Samii, before touching home on a double from Baker Angstman. A single by Borter brought Angstman across to close out the scoring frenzy,
  • The Hornets got a pair of runs back in their half of the third when a walk and hit by pitch sent Liam Regan and David Stechow home to make it 9-2.
  • Angstman scored in the fifth for Middlebury, before four Panthers tallied unearned runs in the seventh to increase the advantage to 15-2.
  • Kalamazoo tallied the final run of the game with a single by Fenkell driving in Dillon Rodriguez for the 15-3 final score.
NOTES
  • Across the games, Root had three runs batted in (RBI), a double and a triple, while also going 3-4 in the second contest.
  • Schoreder was a perfect 4-4 in game two, tallying three RBI.
  • Aidan Han swiped a trio of bases during the second contest. 
  • Middlebury and Kalamazoo met for the first time in the opener, and the Panthers handed the Hornets just their second loss of the season in the nightcap. 
Middlebury travels to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
