#4 Women’s Tennis Concludes Spring Trip With Setback At #1 CMS

The fourth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team wrapped up its spring trip in California with an 8-1 setback at #1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) on Friday.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Athenas jumped out to a 2-0 lead with an 8-3 victory in the #2 doubles slot and an 8-2 win in the third position. 
  • The #1 Panther duo of Sahana Raman and Amy Delman won two-straight games to pull even at 5-5, but the CMS pair of Alisha Chulani and Nikolina Batoshvili claimed the final three games for an 8-5 decision for a 3-0 lead after doubles.
  • The Athenas posted straight-set wins in the fourth spot and the top slot to clinch the match, followed by a triumph at #2 by identical 6-3 set scores.
  • Gena Huang dropped the opening set at #5 (6-3) but rebounded for a 6-0 victory in the second set to send the match to a superbreaker. During the superbreaker, CMS' Sena Selby posted a 10-6 win to make it 7-0.
  • The Panthers tallied their lone point with a three-set victory from Charlotte McCann in the sixth slot. McCann cruised in her opening set 6-0 but fell 6-4 in the second. McCann outlasted her opponent 10-6 in the superbreaker to pull Middlebury to within 7-1.
  • The Athenas were victorious in the third spot in a superbreaker for the final 8-1 score.
NOTES
  • The victory by McCann was her first triumph of the spring.
  • The programs play for the 12th time since the series began in 2008.
The Panthers return east and jump back into NESCAC play next Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. contest at #8 Williams.
