Middlebury Upsets #13 Johns Hopkins 7-5

The Middlebury baseball team launched three homeruns over the first two innings to take a 5-1 lead and did not look back, upsetting 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins 7-5 on Friday afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Blue Jays got on the board right away, tallying a run in the top of the first. With a runner on second, Matthew Cooper knocked a base hit through the right side to bring Isaiah Winikur home and take a 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Mitchell Schroeder and Lucas Flemming each singled, before Nathan Samii launched a roundtripper to deep center field to make it 3-1.
  • The Panthers continued to extend their lead in the second inning. David Byrne made it 4-1 with a homer to left. Two batters later, Beau Root blasted a solo shot to left to increase the advantage to four (5-1).
  • Johns Hopkins pulled to within one in the sixth. With runners on first and second, Dillon Souvignier roped a triple to center which cleared the bases. Caleb Cyr followed with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 5-4.
  • Middlebury moved back in front by two (6-4) in the bottom of the sixth as Chris Borter brought Gus Parker across home plate with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Blue Jays would not go away, cutting the Panther lead to one (6-5) on a home run by Cyr in the top of the eighth.
  • That was as close as Johns Hopkins would get. Middlebury tacked on a seventh tally in the bottom of the eighth as Borter scored Parker with yet another sacrifice fly to give the Panthers the 7-5 victory.
NOTES
  • Owen Tross picked up his second win of the season on the mound, while Dylan Knightly earned his first career save.
  • Borter's two RBIs in today's contest give him a team-high 14 this spring.
  • The meeting was just the second between the programs with each team claiming one victory apiece.
Middlebury returns to the diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader against #19 Kalamazoo to close out spring break.
