Early Start Powers Panthers Past Lawrence 19-7

The Middlebury baseball team jumped out to a 7-1 lead after three innings on its way to a 19-7 triumph over Lawrence on Wednesday. The Panthers scored in eight of the nine innings during the victory.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury tallied four runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Chris Borter and Baker Angstman as well as a run-scoring double from Lucas Flemming for a 4-0 lead.
  • The Vikings cut the deficit to three (4-1) in the bottom of the frame when Edan Perez walked and eventually came around to score on a base hit to left field by William Zatkowski. 
  • The Panthers added two more runs in the second on an RBI double off the bat of Mitchell Schroeder and a base hit from Flemming as well as one more in the third for a 7-1 edge.
  • In the fourth, Angstman made it an 8-1 contest when he drove in Nathan Samii after Samii reached on a Lawrence miscue.
  • The Vikings pulled to within five in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded, Zach Leslie was hit by a pitch and William Polanco followed with a walk to bring the score to 8-3.
  • Lawrence scored three times in the fifth, including an RBI double to right center by Jacob Charon, to make it a two-run game at 8-6.
  • Middlebury responded with three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh, highlighted by run-scoring base knocks in each frame from Flemming, for a 13-6 advantage.
  • Zatkowski touched home plate in the bottom of the seventh on a balk to make it 13-7.
  • The Panthers tallied three runs in the eighth, including a two-run home run from Borter, and three more in the ninth highlighted by a solo homer from Sammy Smith, for the final 19-7 score.
NOTES
  • Flemming finished with a season-best five RBI and went 5-for-5 at the plate with a pair of runs scored. The five hits are tied for second in the program's single-game record book.
  • Root (2-for-4), Borter (2-for-4) and Angstman (2-for-4) each had multi-hit games, with Borter scoring a career-best four times and Angstman lying his career high with three runs batted in. 
  • Gavin Gattuso picked up his first career win on the mound in relief, tossing 1.1 shutout innings. 
  • Wednesday's game was the fourth meeting between the programs with the Panthers winning all four.
Middlebury returns to action on Friday with a 9:45 a.m. contest against #13 Johns Hopkins.
