#1 Women’s Lacrosse Opens The Season With 16-5 Victory At #18 Amherst

The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team opened its season with a 16-5 victory at #18 Amherst on Saturday afternoon, running its winning streak to 29-straight triumphs.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Mammoths took an early lead with 1:48 elapsed. Bridget Finley found Emma Crotty cutting to the net, before Crotty tucked the ball into the top-right corner for a 1-0 edge.
  • The Panthers leveled the contest with 4:17 remaining. Caroline Adams dodged her defender and fired a shot into the upper right 90 to make it 1-1.
  • Middlebury took a 2-1 edge on a free-position goal by Adams with 2:55 left in the opening stanza.
  • The visitors moved into a two-goal lead (3-1) after 2:07 in the second stanza. Susan Rowley fired a pass to Niki Mormile, who quickly ripped her close-range shot past Amherst goalie Jessye Salmon. 
  • Adams completed her hat trick with 6:28 to go in the first half, beforeKelcey Dion and Hope Shue tallied their first goals of the season to bring the score to 6-1 with 4:03 left before halftime. 
  • The Mammoths cut the deficit to four (6-2) on a free-position goal by Bridget Darcy at the 3:34 mark in the second quarter. 
  • Adams responded, firing a bid into the bottom-left corner with 2:38 left to give the Panthers a 7-2 advantage heading into the locker room.
  • Middlebury opened the third quarter on the front foot, scoring five unanswered markers over the opening 5:42. Shue capped the span by ripping a shot into the top-right corner to give the visitors a commanding 12-2 lead.
  • The Panthers closed the stanza with a free-position strike from Shue and the first collegiate goal from Kate Motley to move into a 12-goal lead (14-2) heading into the final frame.
  • Amherst began the fourth quarter with two-consecutive tallies to pull to within 10 (14-4), before Middlebury answered with a pair of markers from Charlotte Price to restore the 12-goal lead (16-4) with 4:15 remaining.
  • With 2:28 to go, the hosts added a fifth and final tally as Rachel Rogers found the back of the net with a free-position shot, making the final score 16-5 in favor of the Panthers.
NOTES
  • Shue and Adams each recorded four goals, while Motley tallied the first two markers of her collegiate career. 
  • The programs played for the 59th time with Middlebury holding a 52-7 advantage in the all-time series. The Panthers have won 13-straight meetings against the Mammoths.
Middlebury continues its road stretch on Sunday when it faces Babson at 1:00 p.m.
