#3 Men’s Tennis Races Past Redlands 8-1

The third-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team kicked off its California trip with an 8-1 win over the University of Redlands on Saturday night.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The duo of Noah Laber and Aidan Harris opened the match by cruising to an 8-1 victory in the second spot.
  • At #3, Hugh Hentschel and Joe Mairs made it 2-0 with an 8-5 win, before the Bulldogs claimed a back-and-forth 8-6 triumph in the top spot to make it 2-1.
  • In singles action, Hentschel carried his momentum over from doubles, easing to a 6-0, 6-1 win in the sixth slot. 
  • Neel Epstein also won in straight-set (6-0, 6-4) at #5 to extend the Panther lead to 4-1.
  • In the top spot, Laber clinched the match for Middlebury, posting identical 6-4 score lines to make it 5-1.
  • Julian Wu (6-1, 6-4) increased the lead to 6-1 with a triumph at #2. 
  • In the fourth slot, Harris dropped the first set 6-4, but rebounded, claiming the next two by 6-1 scores to push the lead to 7-1.
  • The Panthers closed the match with a come-from-behind win in the third spot. Robby Ward split the first pair of sets (1-6, 7-6 (4)) before winning the tiebreaker 11-9 to secure the 8-1 victory.
NOTES
  • With the win, Middlebury moves to 6-0 in dual matches this spring. This marks the program's best start to a season since the 2018-19 campaign.
  • The programs played for the ninth time and the first time since 2015. The Panthers have won all nine matches in the series.
Middlebury returns to the court for two matches on Sunday. The squad faces Chapman at 2:00 p.m. EST, before taking on Hope International at 8:00 p.m. EST at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
