Middlebury’s Late Rally Comes Up Just Short Against #2 Endicott 8-6

The Middlebury baseball team put together a ninth-inning rally against #2 Endicott on Sunday, but the Gulls thwarted the comeback bid to slip past the Panthers 8-6 in Florida.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a pair of solo home runs. Nathan Samii leadoff the frame with a blast to left-center field, followed three batters later by a roundtripper to right center off the bat of Beau Root.
  • The Gulls took the lead in the fourth on a three-run homer to right center by Joey Frammartino.
  • The Panthers knotted the contest (3-3) in the bottom half of the frame. Joe Basso was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Gus Parker.
  • John Mulready gave Endicott a one-run edge in the sixth. He started the inning with a double to left center, moved to third on a sac bunt and scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Gulls pushed their lead to 5-3 in the eighth. TJ Liponis walked and later touched home plate on a sac fly by Zach Stephenson.
  • Samii brought the Panthers to within a run (5-4) in the home half of the inning with his second solo homer of the contest.
  • Endicott responded with three runs in the top of the ninth, highlighted by a two-run triple from Liponis, for an 8-4 lead.
  • Middlebury pulled to within 8-6 in their final at-bat on an RBI single through the left side by Mitchell Schroeder to score Parker who walked. With runners on the corners, Zip Malley reached on an error to drive in Borter who induced a base on balls and put Panthers on first and third with two outs. Endicott relief pitcher Will Fox got out of the jam with a flyout to center field for the final 8-6 score.
NOTES
  • Justin Lessing pitched the first three innings for the Panthers, striking out nine while allowing just one base hit.
  • Borter produced his second-straight multi-hit game of the Florida trip, going 3-for-4 with a double.
  • Samii's two home run game was the second of his career.
  • Sunday's contest was just the second meeting between the programs, as the Gulls earned a 6-1 victory in the 2023 NCAA Regional.
The Panthers return to action in Florida on Tuesday with a 10:30 a.m. game against William Patterson.
