Curtis Sets Single-Game Assist Record As #16 Middlebury Posts 17-10 Win Over Bates

Billy Curtis set a program single-game assist record with seven helpers, leading the #16 Middlebury men's lacrosse team to a 17-10 come-from-behind victory over Bates. The Panthers used a pair of six-goal spurts to pull away for the triumph in the second half.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Bobcats grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Gray Doyle scored 1:31 into the first quarter on a wraparound shot just over the shoulder of Middlebury goalie Hayden Kern,
  • The Panthers leveled the contest 2:44 later when Curtis ripped a bid from 15 yards out that tucked just inside the left post.
  • With the contest tied 3-3 three minutes into the second quarter, Doyle tallied his third goal of the game on a quick shot in front with 11:02 remaining before halftime. 
  • The visitors grabbed their largest lead (5-3) when Connor Hartman rifled a shot from the left side while a player up with 5:45 left before halftime.
  • The Panthers responded with the next six goals spanning 7:01 of action, including a hat trick from Russell Thorndike, for a 9-5 edge with 11:51 left in the third quarter. 
  • Bates recorded three of the next four tallies covering five minutes of play, pulling to within two (10-8) when Doyle scored on a quick-stick goal from just outside the crease.
  • Middlebury responded with six unanswered goals, highlighted by three from William Ryan, for a 16-8 lead with 7:41 left in the final quarter.
  • Hartman and Lowell Hairston scored for the Bobcats, sandwiched around Brendan Hickey's first goal of the season for the Panthers, to provide the final 17-10 tally.  
NOTES
  • Curtis' seven helpers surpass the single-game total of six which was set twice by Pete Smith (3/24/09) and Jon Broome (4/19/14). Curtis scored two goals in the contest, giving him a career-best nine points.
  • Kern finished with a season-high 16 saves in the victory, marking the fourth time in five contests this spring that the Panther has tallied double-digit saves. He has recorded 10 or more stops 15 times in 26 career games. Kern also earned his 20th career victory in front of the Middlebury goal (20-6). 
  • Ryan ended the contest with a season-high five goals. 
  • Drew Dummer scooped up a career-best five groundballs and added a pair of caused turnovers for the Panther defense. 
  • The programs met for the 37th time with Middlebury holding a 34-3 advantage in the all-time series.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. contest against #9 Union (N.Y.). The game will be played at the U.S. Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Maryland.
