#19 Men’s Lacrosse Downed By #8 Union 11-9

The 19th-ranked Middlebury men's lacrosse team battled eighth-ranked Union on Wednesday night, but was unable to spring the upset as the Garnet Chargers pulled away for an 11-9 triumph. The game took place at the U.S. Lacrosse Headquarters in Maryland.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers took the lead after just 1:01 into the opening quarter. Billy Curtis found Russell Thorndike and his attempt zipped past Union goalie Dan Donahue for the 1-0 edge.
  • The Garnet Chargers responded with two unanswered goals by Michael Shaw over the next 9:20 to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Middlebury leveled the score at 2-2 with 3:36 left in the first frame. After the Panther defense caused a turnover, Henry Tarr raced up the field and fired a long-pole goal into the left corner.
  • With only 37 seconds on the clock, Middlebury moved in front while on the player advantage, Curtis ripped a shot into the top-right netting from straight on to give the Panthers a 4-3 edge.
  • Union knotted the score at 3-3 with 4:24 remaining in the first half. Peter Kip received a pass from Matt McKenzie and rifled a long-range shot into the upper-right corner.
  • With 2:25 to go, the Chargers took the lead as a bid by Emmett Lyne nestled into the top portion of the net to make it 4-3 heading into the halftime break.
  • Middlebury started the second half strong, scoring after 37 seconds. Patrick Jamin cut across the center of the offensive zone and fired an effort past Donahue to make it 4-4.
  • With 6:05 left in the third stanza, William Ryan restored the Panthers' lead with a superb turnaround shot following a nifty assist from Tom Conley. Ryan added another marker just 1:28 later while a player up to extend the Middlebury advantage to a pair (6-4).
  • Union responded with two-consecutive goals by Zach Davis and Shaw over the next 1:30 to even the contest at 6-6, before Shaw found the back of the net with 19 seconds remaining to give the Garnet Chargers a 7-6 edge heading into the final frame.
  • The teams traded goals in the opening 1:09 of the fourth quarter. Davis scored for Union before Ryan responded, completing his hat trick to bring the score to 8-7.
  • With 3:25 elapsed, the Garnet Chargers restored their two-goal edge (9-7) on a bouncing shot by Kip.
  • The Panthers pulled to within one (9-8) with 5:36 to go. Thorndike snatched a ground ball following two close-range saves and ripped a low shot into the bottom corner.
  • Kip answered with two tallies over the next 2:36 to extend Union's lead to three (11-8) with 1:37 left in the contest.
  • Ryan added his fourth goal of the day to cut the deficit to 11-9 with 11 seconds to go, but it was not enough, as the Garnet Chargers hung on for the victory.
NOTES
  • With three points today, Curtis has tallied at least two points in seven-consecutive games.
  • Thorndike has found the back of the net in all six contests this season.
  • The programs met for the 56th time with Middlebury holding a 36-20 advantage in the all-time series.
The Panthers return to Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium on Friday for a 4:00 p.m. contest against Connecticut College.
