#6 Middlebury Drops Tight 8-6 Decision At Babson

The sixth-ranked Middlebury men's lacrosse team dropped a tightly-contested 8-6 contest at Babson on Sunday afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers opened the scoring with 3:10 gone by. On the fast break, William Ryan found a cutting Billy Curtis who flipped his shot past Beaver goalie Alex Fascilla for the 1-0 edge.
  • Babson evened the score at 1-1 just over a minute later on a goal by Luke Wang.
  • Middlebury retook the lead just over midway through the first quarter as Jake Peluso fired a low shot past Fascilla to make it 2-1.
  • Curtis extended the advantage to 3-1 on a bouncing shot into the bottom-left corner with 5:18 remaining in the opening frame.
  • The Beavers cut the deficit to one (3-2) with 4:24 elapsed in the second stanza on a wide open finish from just outside the crease by Tyee Ambrosh.
  • The Panthers pulled back in front by two (4-2) with 5:40 remaining in the first half when Logan White found the back of the net, but Babson answered one minute later to bring the score to 4-3.
  • The hosts knotted the score at four apiece with three minutes to go in the half. Seamus Rooney rifled a shot into the upper-right corner to tie the game at the intermission.
  • The third quarter was a largely defensive affair. Babson tallied the lone goal of the stanza, with Jacob Tauss recording a marker with 7:09 elapsed to give the Beavers their first lead of the day (5-4) heading into the final frame.
  • Middlebury wasted little time tying the game in the fourth quarter, scoring after 22 seconds. White ripped a shot into the roof of the net from the right side to even the contest at 5-5 while on the player-up advantage.
  • Rooney scored two unanswered goals over the next 9:06 to give Babson an 7-5 advantage.
  • With 4:40 left, Topher Bower gave the hosts a three-goal edge, registering a marker on the fast break to make it 8-5.
  • The visitors pulled to within two (8-6) as Russell Thorndike found the far right corner with 3:54 to go, but that was as close as the Panthers would get, as the Beavers held on for the 8-6 win.
NOTES
  • White scored his first two goals of the season during today's contest.
  • The programs played for the seventh time with Babson earning its first win against Middlebury.
The Panthers return to Youngman Field on Saturday for a NESCAC contest against Bates at 1:00 p.m.
