The Middlebury women's basketball team battled Connecticut College in a tightly-contested game on Friday night, hanging on for a 55-48 victory. With the win, the Panthers finish the regular season with a 7-3 NESCAC record.
HIGHLIGHTS
- In a back-and-forth first quarter, Alexa Mustafaj gave Middlebury a 9-5 edge with a jumper at the 4:53 mark.
- After a shot by Connecticut College cut the deficit to 9-7, the Panthers had a 5-0 burst capped by a shot from Kale Tornwini to make it 14-7 with 2:14 to go.
- Trailing 17-10, the Camels closed out the stanza with seven-unanswered points to knot the contest at 17 points apiece.
- The teams traded baskets in the early goings of the second quarter, but a defensive battle ensued until 1:22 was left on the clock.
- Middlebury broke the scoring drought, tallying the final four points to take a 24-21 edge heading into the break.
- The Panthers took the largest lead of the close third stanza with a layup from Mustafaj at the 7:13 mark for the 30-26 edge.
- Trailing 38-36, a free throw from both Bethany Lucey and Augusta Dixon in the waning seconds deadlocked the contest at 38 points heading into the final stanza.
- Back-to-back three-pointers from Calie Messina and Mustafaj gave the Panthers a 44-38 advantage with 7:36 left to play.
- Connecticut College hung around, cutting the deficit down to a pair of points on numerous occasions.
- With Middlebury ahead 51-48 with just under two minutes to go, the Camels were forced to foul, but the Panthers converted 4-of-6 charity tosses to secure the 55-48 win.
NOTES
- With 10 field goals this evening, Mustafaj becomes Middlebury's career leader with 591, surpassing Hall of Famer Sladja Kovijanic's mark of 585 set in 1993. Mustafaj tallied 24 points during the win to move into fourth place on the single-season scoring list with 549.
- Messina nearly recorded a double-double during the victory, tallying 15 points and grabbing a career-high nine boards.
The Panthers currently sit in fourth in the conference standings and await the NESCAC Tournament seedings once the rest of the squads wrap up play on Saturday.
