Williams Slips Past Men’s Ice Hockey 1-0 In Defensive Battle

The Middlebury men's hockey team outshot Williams 33-16, including 19-4 in the third period, but the Ephs prevailed 1-0 on Friday night.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The first period was a defensive affair as both teams had limited chances. The Panthers' had a great opportunity with just under six minutes to go. Matt Myers attempted to stuff the puck past Williams' goaltender Cal Sandquist on the left pipe. The rebound trickled through a crowd of bodies to Paddy Bogart who blasted a close-range effort that was thwarted by the right pad of Sandquist.
  • The Ephs looked to grab the lead with 2:51 remaining. Owen Stadheim made a crafty move to escape two Middlebury defenders and tried to slide his effort around Panther netminder Jake Horoho, but Horoho slammed the door shut to keep it scoreless heading into the second frame.
  • With 6:42 elapsed in the middle period, Jackson Morehouse nearly put Middlebury in front. The forward skated into the offensive zone and rifled a low bid from the right circle that was denied by Sandquist.
  • One minute later, Williams nearly moved in front. David Vieten broke away down the right side of the boards and flipped the puck on net, but Horoho sprawled to his right to make the stop.
  • Williams took the lead with 4:02 left in the period. Connor Tobin retrieved a loose puck on the edge of the right circle and roofed a wrister over the left shoulder of Horoho for the 1-0 advantage.
  • The Panthers came out firing to start the third period. Andrew Seaman found Morehouse in between the circles, but Morehouse's one-timer was kicked just wide of the bottom left corner by Sandquist.
  • With 7:15 left in the contest, a close-range shot from Andrej Hromic was saved and the rebound fell to Michael Fairfax who looked destined to score, but his one-timer was pushed aside by a diving Sandquist.
  • The Panthers peppered the Ephs' net over the final seven minutes of play, tallying nine shots, but Sandquist was determined to seal the shutout and kept Middlebury at bay to give Williams the 1-0 win.
NOTES
  • The programs played for the 141st time with Middlebury holding an 80-50-11 advantage in a series that began in 1928.
The two teams will face off again on Saturday, with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Williamstown, Mass.
