Morehouse’s Hat Trick Propels Men’s Ice Hockey Past Williams 7-5

A hat trick by Jackson Morehouse helped the Middlebury men's ice hockey team avenge Friday night's defeat, earning a 7-5 victory on Saturday night in a frantic, back-and-forth NESCAC contest.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury struck first after 6:53. Kevin Golden fired a blast from the blueline that was headed for the top-left corner of the net. Jackson Morehouse reached out and expertly redirected the puck past Williams goaltender Cal Sandquist for a 1-0 edge.
  • The Panthers wasted little time doubling their advantage, scoring again 33 seconds later. John Burdett wristed a shot from long range that was met by Jin Lee, who tipped the effort over the right shoulder of Sandquist and into the upper corner for a 2-0 lead.
  • The Ephs answered with 9:40 showing on the clock. Connor Tobin drifted down the left side of the offensive zone and zipped a pass toward the right pipe where a charging Connor Fitzpatrick tapped in the puck to cut the deficit to one (2-1).
  • The visitors restored their two-goal advantage with 4:39 remaining in the opening period. Bobby May rifled a shot from the left point that received a late tip from Matt Myers and nestled into the top-right corner to make it 3-1.
  • Williams would not go away and moved back to within one (3-2) with 3:31 to go in the first frame. Logan Valkama weaved through multiple Middlebury defenders before ripping a shot over the left shoulder of Panther goalie Jake Horoho and into the net.
  • Middlebury grabbed its fourth goal just over the midway point. Golden fired a bid that hit the glass behind the goal and squirted out to Morehouse who deposited the puck into the net from a sharp angle to make it 4-2.
  • The Ephs looked to have pulled to within one with 4:16 gone in the final stanza. An initial bid from the left point was redirected into the net, but the goal was waved off for interference during the buildup.
  • The Panthers extended their lead to 5-2 during a two-skater advantage. With just under six minutes gone, Morehouse blasted a slap shot from the left faceoff circle into the top-left corner.
  • Middlebury kept its foot on the gas, utilizing the power play to make it a four-goal game (6-2) 1:02 after its fifth goal. Andrew Seaman dished the puck to Wyatt Pastor who roofed a one-timer from the low slot.
  • Williams was not finished, as the hosts miraculously scored a trio of goals in a 1:33 span to make it 6-5 with 6:08 remaining in the contest.
  • The Panthers iced the game as Andrej Hromic scored an empty-net marker with 1:24 to go to bring the final score to 7-5.
NOTES
  • Morehouse's trio of tallies gives him five goals in his rookie campaign.
  • With his team-leading ninth goal, Lee has registered a point in 11 of the last 16 contests.
  • Hromic has also recorded a point in six of his last eight games.
  • The two teams combined for five first-period goals in both the first and third periods, which is the most in a single period since January 27 of last year.
Middlebury is idle until next Friday when it heads to Hamilton for a 7:00 matchup.
