Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men’s Ice Hockey’s Comeback Bid Falls Short At Hamilton 4-3

The Middlebury men's hockey team mounted a late comeback, rattling off three goals in Friday's third period, but Hamilton hung on for the 4-3 NESCAC victory.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Continentals pulled ahead with 8:26 elapsed. Alex Danis skated into the offensive zone and zipped a centering pass to Ryan Sordillo who was crashing at the right pipe. Sordillo reached out and tapped the puck into the net to give the hosts a 1-0 edge.
  • With 9:44 showing on the clock, Hamilton threatened to score again. Matt Gellerman drove across the crease and attempted to stuff his shot past Panther netminder Jake Horoho, but the goalie dove across the crease to thwart the close-range bid.
  • The Panthers' best opportunity of the opening period came with just 16 seconds to go. An initial shot by Revy Mack was steered aside by Continental goalie Jack Grant. The rebound fell to Jackson Morehouse, whose back-handed effort beat Grant, but was cleared off the goal line by a defender at the last second to maintain Hamilton's advantage.
  • The Continentals doubled their lead with 6:16 gone by in the middle frame. A loose puck squirted out to Devon de Vries between the circles and he fired a wrister into the bottom-right corner to make it 2-0.
  • Hamilton kept its foot on the gas, adding a third tally at the 11:10 mark. Luke Tchor slid a pass through two Middlebury defenders that reached Vincent Gould who made a nifty move around Horoho and tucked his shot inside the right pipe to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • The Panthers got on the board at the 12:42 mark of the final stanza. Skating with a player advantage, Mack received a pass at the blueline and drifted just above the circles before he rifled a wrister over the right shoulder of Grant to make it 3-1.
  • With 6:21 to go in the contest, the Continentals restored their three-goal lead (4-1). Danis dumped the puck down the ice, but an unfortunate bounce off the boards redirected the puck past an unsuspecting Horoho and into the net.
  • Middlebury responded immediately, scoring less than 30 seconds later. Morehouse ripped a slapshot from the left circle that was saved by Grant. The rebound fell to Mack who collected the puck in front of the net and blasted his shot into the corner to cut the deficit to 4-2.
  • The visitors would not go away and with 26 seconds left in the contest, they pulled within one. With Horoho out of the net, Dante Palombo slipped a pass to Michael Fairfax who was just in front of the crease. His first attempt was saved, but he roofed the rebound to bring the score to 4-3.
  • The Panthers searched for a late equalizer, but Hamilton stood tall and killed off the final seconds of the game to hang on for the 4-3 triumph.
NOTES
  • With two goals tonight, Mack has tallied five goals during his first collegiate season.
  • The programs played for the 138th time with Middlebury holding a 91-39-8 advantage in a series that dates back to 1924.
The Panthers close out the regular season when they travel to Amherst on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. matchup.
