Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

First Period Frenzy Lifts Amherst Past Middlebury

A trio of first period goals was enough to help Amherst pull away from the Middlebury men's ice hockey team, as the Panthers concluded the regular season with a 5-2 road defeat to the Mammoths.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Amherst moved in front after only 4:06 of action. Josh Burke drove down the left side of the offensive zone and sent a pass toward the front of the net where Ryan Tucker reached out and tipped the puck past Middlebury goalie Jake Horoho to give the Mammoths a 1-0 edge.
  • The hosts nearly doubled their lead with 10:13 showing on the clock. Matt Vander Vort fired a centering pass to Ryan Corcoran in between the circles. His one-timer looked destined to find the top-left corner, but Horoho slid across the crease and knocked the puck away with an outstretched stick.
  • Amherst took a 2-0 lead with 5:19 remaining in the opening stanza. Following an offensive flurry, Vincent Velocci recycled the puck to Ben Kuzma who was set up in the slot. Kuzma blasted a wrist shot that snuck past Horoho and trickled into the net.
  • Kuzma added his second marker with just over two minutes to go, rifling a wrister from the left circle that nestled into the top-right corner, bringing the score to 3-0 at the end of the first period.
  • The Panthers began the second stanza on the front foot as Wyatt Pastor nearly scored with 3:17 expired, but his close-range effort from the right pipe was thwarted by Amherst netminder Alex Wisco.
  • The Mammoths continued to pull away, scoring again with 6:28 elapsed. Velocci fed Kuzma who rushed toward goal and skated around Andrew Heinze in the Middlebury net to complete his hat trick and make it 4-0.
  • The Panthers got on the board with 58 seconds left in the middle frame. Zach Milton one-timed a shot toward goal which was blocked. The rebound fell to Revy Mack who wrapped around the net and tucked his shot inside the left pipe to cut the deficit to three (4-1).
  • Middlebury continued to attack, and made it a two-goal contest (4-2) with 12:45 remaining in the third period. Following a scramble in front of the crease, Andrej Hromic snagged the puck and banked it off the back of Wisco and into the goal.
  • The Panthers pulled their goalie with four minutes to go and peppered the Amherst defense, but were unable to break through, as the Mammoths tacked on a late empty-net goal to earn the 5-2 victory.
NOTES
  • Mack continued his fine form, scoring his sixth goal of the season and his third tally in his last two games.
  • With a marker today, Hromic has registered a point or more in eight of his last 11 contests.
  • The programs faced off for the 93rd time with Middlebury owning a 63-25-5 advantage in a series that started in 1925.
The Panthers will now wait to learn their seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament.
