#6 Women’s Hockey Falls 3-2 At Wesleyan

The #6 Middlebury women's hockey team bounced back from an early 2-0 deficit to even the contest at 2-2, but a later third period goal gave Wesleyan a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Cardinals took the early lead on the power play after 9:10 in the opening period. Jenna Stevens blasted a shot from the blueline that was redirected by Brigette Goeler-Sloan and snuck past Panther netminder Sophia Merageas for a 1-0 edge.
  • Wesleyan doubled its advantage with just over five minutes remaining. Dylan Green received a pass from Mairead Kennedy and found the corner of the net to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage heading into the middle frame.
  • Middlebury halved the deficit with 5:40 elapsed in the second stanza. With an extra skater, Cece Zeigler found Kate Flynn who made no mistake, beating Cardinal goalie Rai Halloren to move within one (2-1).
  • The Panthers leveled the contest just three minutes later. Sabrina Kim zipped a pass to Raia Schluter who rushed toward the goal and fired her effort into the corner to make it 2-2 with one period left to play.
  • Merageas was forced into a pair of good saves over the first 8:21 of the third period. Sam DeLeo rifled two efforts on target, but Merageas managed to thwart both bids to keep the score even.
  • Middlebury looked destined to take the lead with six minutes remaining. The Panthers rattled off five shots over a 1:02 span but could not grab the lead, as Halloren kept the visitors at bay.
  • Wesleyan scored the game-winner with just 1:28 showing on the clock. Caroline Kee fed Caroline Mezias who broke the deadlock and handed the hosts a late 3-2 victory.
NOTES
  • With her goal today, Flynn has now tallied one point in three of her last four games.
