The Middlebury women's basketball team led #11 Bowdoin for nearly three-quarters of action, but the Polar Bears were able to pull away in the final frame for the 61-54 NESCAC Semifinal victory.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers came out strong, taking a 6-0 lead with a pair of back-to-back three-pointers from Calie Messina.
- Bowdoin chipped away at the deficit, cutting it down to one (10-9) on a jumper by Callie Godfrey with 4:26 left on the clock.
- Alexa Mustafaj sank a shot from beyond the arc to push the Middlebury edge to 13-9 after one-quarter of action.
- Out of the break, Middlebury increased its lead to six (19-13), capping the span with a jumper from Mustafaj at the seven-minute mark.
- A layup by Maria Belardi sliced the advantage to 19-16 midway through the stanza, but a pair of threes from Mustafaj gave the Panthers a nine-point lead (25-16) with 3:44 to go.
- A last-minute layup from Polar Bear Sydney Jones cut the deficit to six (28-22) at the half.
- Trailing 36-32 with 3:59 left in the third stanza, Bowdoin went on a 10-2 run over the remainder of the session. During the span, Jones accounted for half of the team's points to help the Polar Bears take a 42-38 edge.
- The Panthers pulled to within one (42-41) on a three from Kale Tornwini to start the final frame.
- Bowdoin responded with 10 unanswered points, making it 52-41 with 4:16 to go.
- A 6-0 spurt sparked by Messina sliced the Polar Bear edge to five (52-47) with just over two minutes remaining.
- Middlebury was forced to foul down the stretch, but Bowdoin converted 9-of-10 charity tosses to secure the 61-54 win.
NOTES
- Middlebury advanced to the NESCAC Semifinals for just the fifth time in program history and for the second-consecutive season.
- The program made its 17th appearance in the tournament.
- The loss was just the second on the road this year (10-2).
- With 17 points today, Messina has scored double-digit figures in five-straight games.
The Panthers await their fate in the NCAA Tournament when the bracket is announced on Monday, February 26.
