Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#8 Middlebury Comes From Behind To Top #7 Hamilton 4-3 In Overtime

The #8 Middlebury women's ice hockey team trailed 3-1 in the third period, but came from behind to top #7 Hamilton 4-3. Avery McInerny tallied the game-tying marker with just 43 seconds left in regulation, before assisting Kate Flynn to the golden goal in the extra session.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers were dominant in the opening period, outshooting the Continentals 17-3, but were unable to break the scoreless draw.
  • Hamilton got on the board with 11:24 expired in the second stanza when Claire McGennis went bar down on a one-timer for the 1-0 edge.
  • The Continentals took a 2-0 advantage at the 16:38 mark. An initial shot by Abby Smith was blocked by a Middlebury defender, but the rebound squirted to the right side of the goal where Emily Ferguson tucked her shot under the crossbar.
  • The Panthers cut the deficit to one (2-1) with just 32 ticks off the clock in the third period when Callia Ferraris one-timed a pass from McInerny into the back of the net.
  • Hamilton responded nearly three minutes later when Bobbi Roca stole the puck from a defender and pinged her shot off the left pipe for the 3-1 lead.
  • With 4:11 elapsed, Middlebury answered to slice the Continental advantage back down to one (3-2). A pair of back-to-back bids by Jordan Hower were denied by a sprawling Mac Donovan, but Hower persisted and eventually shoveled the puck past Donovan.
  • Both teams traded power-play opportunities midway through the stanza, but neither could find the back of the net.
  • With just 43 seconds left in regulation, the Panthers scored to knot the contest at 3-3. Ferraris dug the puck out from behind the goal and found McInerny on the left pipe who scored to force overtime.
  • With 3:33 left on the clock in the extra session, Middlebury secured the 4-3 victory. An initial bid by McInerny hit the left pipe and ricocheted back to her stick. McInerny, two defenders and the goalie all vied for the puck, but it was the Panther who was able to gain control, sliding a pass to Flynn who was on the right pipe unattended. Flynn made no mistake, slotting her one-timer inside the post to complete the 4-3 come-from-behind triumph.
NOTES
  • For the second-consecutive week, Flynn tallied the game-winning goal.
  • McInerny scored once and tallied a pair of assists during the win.
  • The Panthers and the Continentals played for the 74th time, with Middlebury improving to 66-7-0 in the series.
  • With the victory, the Panthers take control of second place in the NESCAC standings with 33 points. With Amherst sitting in first with 35 points, the top spot will be determined on Saturday.
