The eighth-ranked Middlebury women's ice hockey team battled #7 Hamilton to a 1-1 tie on Senior Day. With the 1-0-1 weekend, the Panthers have secured a top-two seed for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament and will host a quarterfinal contest on Saturday.
HIGHLIGHTS
- With 11:49 elapsed in the opening period, the Continentals took a 1-0 edge. Sophie Berghammer intercepted a clearing attempt by Middlebury just inside the blue line, and wristed her one-timer under the crossbar for the one-goal lead.
- The Panthers nearly equalized with less than four minutes remaining in the frame. Kate Flynn sent a pass from the edge of the right circle toward the slot, but Callia Ferraris' point-blank bid was thwarted by goalie Mac Donovan.
- After 14:19 of action in the second stanza, Middlebury looked for the game-tying goal during a power play. Britt Nawrocki sent a pass from the left dot to Cat Appleyard at the top of the circles, but Appleyard's attempt grazed the crossbar and careened away.
- With just over two minutes left in the session, Hamilton's Claire McGennis stole the puck and had a breakaway attempt, but netminder Sophia Will denied the chance.
- The Panthers broke through with just 56.7 seconds left on the second-period clock. Audrey Lazar sent a long pass from the blue line that split a pair of defenders. Molly MacQueen beat everyone to the puck and blasted it past Donovan to deadlock the game at 1-1.
- The third period saw the least amount of shots on goal, with the best chance for the golden tally coming just seven seconds in. The Continentals won the opening faceoff, and Berghammer fired the puck off the left boards. Abby Smith snagged the puck, but her attempt from the doorstep was denied by Will.
- Middlebury had its best chance to tally the game-winner seconds after the puck was dropped. The Panthers won the faceoff and Ferraris skated into the offensive zone with a head of steam, but her blast from the left dot whistled off the pipe.
- With two minutes remaining, Hamilton had a flurry of shots that sent Will sprawling across the crease, but the Panther denied all four chances to secure the 1-1 tie.
