Middlebury Falls To #1 Juniata In NCAA Regional Final

The Middlebury volleyball team battled two-time defending national champion #1 Juniata in three hard-fought sets on Saturday, before falling 3-0 during the NCAA Tournament Regional Final.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Tied at 1-1 in the opening set, the Eagles ripped off a quick 5-0 spurt highlighted by three kills from Mackenzie Coley for a 6-2 advantage.
  • The Panthers slowly chipped away at the deficit, moving to within two (11-9) on a service ace by Campbell Keller.
  • Juniata responded with six of the next seven points for a 17-10 edge capped on a kill from Kennedy Christy.
  • Middlebury methodically pulled closer, cutting it to three (22-19) on a service ace from Ella Pate, but the Eagles tallied the final three points for the 25-19 victory.
  • Deadlocked at 5-5 in the second set, Juniata rattled off the next five points for a 10-5 lead capped on a kill by Courtney Williams. 
  • The Panthers clawed back to within one (13-12) on a block by Ava Tuccio and Molly Harrison.
  • The hosts ripped off a 6-1 run for a 19-13 advantage and eased to the 25-16 win.
  • Ahead 6-5 in the third frame, the Eagles tallied 17 of the next 22 points and completed the sweep with a 25-12 triumph.
NOTES
  • Harrison tallied nine kills on Saturday, giving her 428 this fall. The Panther finishes second in the school record books, just one kill shy of the mark of 429 set in 2000 by Hall of Famer Leslie Edwards.
  • Gabbie O'Toole handed out 16 assists, giving her 1,053 this season which sits fourth in program history. She ends her career with 3,523 helpers, good for second in the Middlebury record books, while her 104 matches played is tied for eighth. 
  • The contest between Juniata and Middlebury was the first in the sport of volleyball.
  • The Eagles claimed the 2022 and 2023 NCAA Championships
  • Harrison and O'Toole were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts.
  • The Panthers made the program's eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the first in the regional final since 2011. 
Middlebury concluded its season with an 18-11 record.
