#7 Women’s Soccer Handles Plymouth State 6-1

The #7 Middlebury women's soccer team scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of action and didn't look back in a 6-1 win over Plymouth State on Wednesday.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury got on the board in the eighth minute of the first half. Olivia O'Reilly worked the ball into the middle of the box before sending a pass back toward Chloe Swindle. She secured possession and shook a defender before firing a shot that deflected off Plymouth State goalie Sydney Rowe and into the bottom-right corner for an early 1-0 advantage.
  • The home team tallied its second goal of the half with 9:31 elapsed. Swindle sent a beautiful through pass between two defenders. Joely Virzi was there to collect the ball and ripped it into the right panel.
  • In the 29th minute, the visitors forced a turnover deep in Middlebury's end. Olivia Howard took a quick pass from Molly Bellmore and cut past a defender. Howard's attempt came from 25 yards out and sailed over goalie Frankie Marston into the upper 90 to cut the lead to 2-1.
  • Middlebury looked to create another opportunity in the 40th minute. Cate Woolsey took a deep pass from Fiona Linnau and flew past two defenders before sliding the ball into the bottom-right corner to make it a 3-1 game.
  • At the 46:07 mark, Lucy Patton crossed the ball from her right. A Plymouth State defender tried to clear but the bouncing ball fell to Gigi Day, who chipped it into the right portion of the net to extend Middlebury's lead to 4-1.
  • The home team crafted another opportunity with 60:09 expired. Stella Espinasse sent a pass shaded left of the goal to Abby Ward, who sliced a shot that tipped off and hit the back of the net for Middlebury's fifth goal of the evening.
  • Corinne Hessler looked to join the score sheet in the 79th minute, but Drea Oswell came off her line and scooped up her attempt.
  • In the 84th minute, Tindra Bergstrand looked to get the visitors on the board again when she surged toward the goal and crossed a chance that Frankie Getman cleared toward the center of the field.
  • Middlebury tacked on its final goal of the evening at the 83:52 mark. Kjersti Moritz grabbed possession and fired a screamer that sailed into the top-left corner for her second tally of the season.
NOTES

  • Woolsey tallied her first goal of the season while Swindle produced her third career multi-point showing.
