The sixth-ranked Middlebury women's soccer team scored one goal in each of Saturday's halves, blanking Bowdoin during a 2-0 victory.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Chloe Swindle and Mia Feldman brought the pressure early, recording consecutive shots two minutes into the opening half. Swindle's bid went wide of the right post while Feldman sailed her attempt over the top-left corner.
- The Panthers had a strong opportunity with 8:59 elapsed. Feldman settled a bouncing ball and found Gigi Day. Timing the run perfectly, Day blitzed past two defenders to create a one-on-one chance with Polar Bear goalie Charlotte Iannone that sailed inches wide of the right post.
- Middlebury struck gold in the 11th minute, as Feldman stole possession deep in Bowdoin's end and sent a pass into the center of the box. Day crashed toward the net and flicked the ball over the outstretched arms of Iannone for a 1-0 advantage.
- Bowdoin looked for the equalizer at the 18:37 mark off a free kick. Mary Rainey faked the long shot and passed to Jess Klein, who fired from 25 yards out. Carolyn Kelley stayed on her line and snagged the ball for her first save.
- The Polar Bears tested Kelley again in the 26th minute. Grace Harvey took a pass from Dani Musry and launched an attempt that looked destined for the bottom right corner. Kelley timed the attempt perfectly and corralled the shot to keep the home team off the board.
- Fanny Lodge looked to double the Panther lead at 42:25 but could not get enough power on an attempt that rolled into the arms of Iannone.
- Middlebury had back-to-back chances to open the second half. Stella Espinasse sent an attempt into the box that was saved by Iannone. Feldman settled the ball and shook a defender before launching the ball just over the crossbar.
- Laila Nickelson had a chance to tie things up at the 48:16 mark after a strong cross from Jackie Shores. Kelley stood her ground again, catching the point-blank attempt.
- The Panthers doubled their advantage in the 60th minute following a corner kick. Joely Virzi volleyed an arching ball out of the air on the right post for a 2-0 advantage with 30:27 left.
- Shots were hard to come by in the last 30 minutes. Abby Ward produced Middlebury's best opportunity with 15:15 remaining, sending a left-footed shot toward the post that Iannone saved.
- The Panther defense limited the hosts to just a pair of off-target attempts in the last two minutes to earn the 2-0 victory.
