The Middlebury volleyball team wrapped up the ultra-competitive New England Challenge on Saturday. The Panthers fell in a pair of tightly-contested matches, as Springfield earned the 3-2 decision to start the day and Babson triumphed 3-0 to close out the competition.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. SPRINGFIELD
- The opening set was tied 10 times before either team was able to gain a sizable lead. Knotted at 18 points apiece, Middlebury had a 4-1 burst capped on back-to-back kills from Gabbie O'Toole and Ava Tuccio for a 22-19 edge.
- The Pride cut the deficit down to one (22-21), taking advantage of a pair of Panther miscues, but a kill from Molly Harrison followed by an ace by Annabelle Rando secured the 25-22 victory.
- The second frame was much like the first, with Middlebury taking a slight advantage (13-8) on a kill from Tuccio.
- Springfield battled back, rattling off a 7-0 run, backed by strong serving from Morgan Stafford, for a 15-13 edge.
- Ahead by one (18-17), the Pride strung together four points to extend the lead to 22-17 on a kill by Emily Keaveney.
- The Panthers sliced the lead to one on a pair of occasions, but Springfield's Maeve Voltz recorded the final kill for the 25-23 win, deadlocking the match at 1-1.
- The Pride carried their momentum into the third stanza, jumping out to a quick 3-0 edge, before seeing the match tied nine times.
- Knotted at 22-22, a kill by Lauren Baxter and an attack error by Springfield gave Middlebury a 24-22 edge.
- Keaveney recorded a point, but Tuccio closed out the set with a kill for the 25-23 triumph.
- The Pride got out to a fast start in the fourth, grabbed an 11-4 lead and never looked back en route to a 25-13 victory to force a fifth set.
- Springfield snagged a 4-1 edge to open the final frame, but Middlebury hung around cutting the deficit down to one on three occasions.
- Leading 9-8, the Pride strung together six of the next nine points to secure the set 15-11 and edge the Panthers 3-2.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. BABSON
- The Panthers came out on fire to begin the first stanza, securing a 6-0 edge that included consecutive services aces from O'Toole and two kills from Harrison.
- Babson would rally later in the set with a kill from Lauren Gips and four straight Middlebury attack errors to jump back within one (11-10).
- Following a timeout, Devin McCormack helped the Panthers surge ahead with a kill that blossomed into a 5-2 surge to make it 16-12.
- The Beavers continued to stay close, cutting the deficit down to one three times before Tuccio slammed home a kill to put Middlebury on the doorstep at 24-22 before Babson rallied to push the set to extra points on an ace from Tatum Stelter to make it 24 apiece.
- A cat-and-mouse game occurred until an Angelina Holm kill sparked the final three points and a 33-31 whirlwind opening victory for the home team.
- Babson took a lead early and slowly increased it to 17-13 in another yo-yo set.
- Middlebury battled back, tying the frame at 18, 19 and 21 points apiece.
- It wasn't enough as the Beavers capitalized on a pair of errors to take the stanza 25-22.
- Babson started the final set with a 4-1 run capped on back-to-back service aces from Lauren Grifin.
- The Panthers hung tight, eventually tying the session at 21 points apiece on a kill from Harrison.
- The Beavers closed out the contest with another 4-1 burst, taking the set 25-22 and claiming the 3-0 victory.
NOTES
- O'Toole had a remarkably solid day, totaling 35 assists, 10 digs and a pair of service aces in each match. With her four aces, she moves into sixth place on Middlebury's all-time list with 142 in her career.
- Harrison recorded her 13th and 14th double-doubles, posting 12 kills and digs against Babson, to go along with 13 kills and 15 digs in the Springfield match. She was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
- The Panthers played the Pride for the 14th time, while facing the Beavers in the 10th matchup.
Middlebury closes out the regular season next weekend with conference action. The Panthers play at Amherst on Friday at 7:00 p.m., before traveling to Hamilton on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. start.
