Harrison’s Career Afternoon Leads Volleyball Past Wesleyan 3-1 on Senior Day

Molly Harrison had a banner day for the Middlebury volleyball team, recording a career-best 25 kills to help clinch a 3-1 victory over Wesleyan.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Cardinals raced out of the gates in the opening set, securing a 7-3 lead highlighted by two kills from Michelle Jorba.
  • Middlebury chipped the deficit down to 8-6 with successful attacks from Gabby Pribisich and O'Toole until Morgan Mattson hit one down the line to spark another 7-3 Wesleyan surge and force a Panther timeout at 15-9.
  • Caroline Byrne would rally the troops after the timeout, slamming a kill that developed into a 7-2 burst to put the home team within one (17-16).
  • The Cardinals continued to stay in front until the 23-22 mark when Harrison tallied her fifth kill of the set to tie things at 23 points apiece.
  • Pribisich finished the opener with consecutive kills to cap a 3-0 run and secure the Panther set, 25-23.
  • Middlebury drew first in the second, building up a 9-4 advantage headlined by points from Harrison, Pribisich and Devin McCormack.
  • The lead grew, as Lauren Baxter got in on the kill party with three to stretch the advantage to eight (15-7) and force a stoppage.
  • Carly Grumlet tried to start a late run in the visitor's favor with a kill to get within six (22-16). 
  • The Panthers wouldn't back down, finishing the frame with a trio of points for the 25-16 win.
  • Sophie Corbeil (four kills) and Bianca Gonya (three kills) provided a boost to the Cardinals to begin the third, helping build an 11-1 edge.
  • Middlebury sliced away at the Wesleyan lead, eventually getting it down to six (23-17) on kills from Harrison and O'Toole plus a block from Pribisich.
  • The Cardinals stayed the course, securing the set with a block from Paulina Marino-Bindi and Gonya (25-18).
  • The Panthers regrouped and rebounded in the fourth, winning nine of the first 13 points to race ahead, 9-4. Ava Tuccio and McCormack combined for four kills in the stretch.
  • Wesleyan responded, jumping on an 8-4 strike capped by a Corbeil kill to cut the deficit to one at 13-12.
  • Middlebury continued to hold the advantage until a 4-0 blitz with two attacks and a block from Corbeil gave the visitors their first lead of the set at 22-21.
  • Following a Middlebury timeout, the hosts sealed the set (25-23) and the match by winning four out of the next five points.

NOTES

  • Pribisich had a career outing with 13 successful attacks.
  • Campbell Keller hit the 50 career service ace plateau with two on Saturday.
  • O'Toole handed out 40 or more assists for the seventh time this season and 20th time in a Panther uniform.

Middlebury takes a break from conference action next weekend when it heads to Massachusetts for the New England Challenge. The Panthers play at #4 Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Friday night before two neutral matches on Saturday against Springfield (11:00 a.m.) and Babson (3:30 p.m.).
