Women’s Basketball Halts Hamilton 57-54 To Open NESCAC Play

The Middlebury women's basketball team began NESCAC competition with a 57-54 victory over Hamilton on Friday night, handing the hosts just their second loss of the season.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Continentals moved out to a 9-4 lead after 3:06 on a layup by Taylor Lambo.
  • With 3:02 remaining in the opening frame, Hamilton took an eight-point lead of the night (18-10) on a three-pointer from Emily Hall. 
  • The Continentals maintained their edge before a jumper by Middlebury's Augusta Dixon cut the deficit to six (22-16) to end the first quarter.
  • The Panthers opened the second stanza on a 7-1 run to knot the contest at 23 apiece on a pair of charity tosses by Emily Downer with 4:07 to go. 
  • Hamilton extended its advantage back to eight (31-23) with 2:32 left, but Middlebury closed the half with a 6-0 spurt, capped by a layup from Dixon to slice the Continental lead to just two (31-29) at the intermission.
  • Trailing 34-29, the Panthers rattled off eight of the next 10 points to storm to a 37-36 edge on a layup by Dixon with 4:01 left in the third quarter.
  • Dixon continued to lead the visitors over the final 1:42, scoring all five of Middlebury's points to close the frame and give the Panthers a three-point edge (44-41) heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The teams traded baskets to begin the final frame. Trailing 48-43, the Continentals went on a 5-0 run, capped by a layup from Lambo, to even the contest (48-48) with 5:05 remaining.
  • With two minutes to go, Hamilton jumped back in front by two (53-51) on an old-fashioned three-point play by Kendall Harris.
  • Middlebury scored four of the next five points, highlighted by a pair of clutch free throws by Gabby Stuart with 54 seconds to go, to take a 55-54 edge.
  • The Panther defense locked in over the final 50 seconds of play, getting three-consecutive stops while knocking down a pair of free throws to claim the 57-54  victory.
NOTES
  • Dixon continues her superb play this season, posting a career-high 19 points, while adding nine rebounds and two steals.
  • Downer tallied a season-best 13 points in the triumph.
  • The Panthers have now won seven of their last nine games.
  • The programs met for the 39th time with Middlebury owning a 23-16 advantage. Middlebury has won the last seven matchups. 
The Panthers travel to Amherst to take on the #10 Mammoths tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
