#6 Women’s Hockey Tallies 3-1 Home Win Over Connecticut College

The sixth-ranked Middlebury women's ice hockey team recorded Friday's last two goals on its way to a 3-1 victory over Connecticut College in Chip Kenyon '85 Arena.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers jumped on the scoreboard just 1:34 into the opening period. Camel netminder Devon Galizio saved an initial shot from between the circles by Britt Nawrocki. The rebound came to the stick of Liv Fernandez who ripped a shot that was tipped on the left post by Jordan Hower for the 1-0 lead.
  • The Camels looked to even the contest at the 11:49 mark, but the quick glove of Middlebury goalie Sophia Will stopped a bid on the rush by Sydney Frank.
  • Connecticut College produced a great chance with 4:25 left in the frame, but three shots in quick succession were thwarted by Will to preserve the one-goal edge.
  • The hosts nearly grabbed a two-goal advantage 2:30 into the middle stanza. Nawrocki rifled a rising shot that Galizio saved with her shoulder and clanged off the crossbar.
  • The Camels leveled the game 2:21 later when Kylie McCarthy redirected a shot from the point by Casey Chesner to make it 1-1 while the visitors had the extra skater.
  • The action was fast and furious over the ensuing minutes with both sides manufacturing chances. Middlebury had its greatest attempt during the stretch a minute later when Sabrina Kim found space on the edge of the left circle, but Galizio pushed across her crease and thwarted the shot.
  • Connecticut College nearly took the lead with 7:24 showing on the second-period clock, but a wraparound chance by Alana Burm was saved by the skate of Will.
  • The Panthers regained the lead at 18:50 when Kylie Quinlan wristed a shot into the upper-left corner on a two-on-one rush for a 2-1 edge.
  • Middlebury came out to start the third period with back-to-back shots from Quinlan and Raia Schluter in the opening 20 seconds, but both were denied by Galizio.
  • The Panthers maintained that pressure and increased their lead on the power play. Avery McInerny won the first faceoff of the penalty before a bid from the point by Cece Ziegler was tapped into the left side of the net by Kate Flynn just 12 seconds later with 5:42 elapsed.
  • Looking to draw closer, the Camels earned a power play with 9:29 remaining. Middlebury's penalty kill locked down, allowing just one shot on a bid from the slot by Claire Sammons that Will caught with her glove.
  • Connecticut College called a timeout and pulled Galizio with 2:19 left, but the visitors were unable to muster any chances as the Panthers secured the 3-1 triumph.
NOTES

  • Middlebury and Connecticut College played for the 53rd meeting in an all-time series in which the Panthers hold a decisive 44-5-4 advantage.
