Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#3 Plattsburgh State Sneaks By #6 Middlebury 2-1

The sixth-ranked Middlebury women's ice hockey team dropped a tightly-contested matchup at third-ranked Plattsburgh State, coming up short 2-1.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Cardinals had an opportunity to open the scoring after 8:07 of action. A loose puck fell to the stick of Emma McLean on the edge of the crease. McLean attempted to stuff the puck home, but Panther netminder Sophia Merageas slid across to deny the close-range shot.
  • Middlebury had the best scoring chance of the opening period, coming with 4:40 left on the clock.Avery McInerny broke away for a one-on-one opportunity as she came out of the penalty box,  but her low shot was thwarted by a sprawling Lilla Nease.
  • The Cardinals looked to grab the lead after 1:27 in the second stanza. Emily Kazprzak raced around the net and centered a pass for Zsofia Pazmandi who fired a shot from between the circles, but Merageas snagged the bid to keep the contest scoreless.
  • Plattsburgh moved ahead at the 4:54 mark. Pazmandi skated down the left side of the offensive zone during a two-on-one break, and pulled the puck across her body, before tucking her backhanded shot inside the left pipe for a 1-0 edge.
  • With 9:30 to go, the Panthers nearly leveled the score. Molly MacQueen centered a pass for Kate Flynn who rifled a blast from between the circles, but Nease stood tall to deny the effort.
  • Pazmandi almost scored her second tally with 7:30 to go as she cut across the goal and flipped a backhanded bid toward the left corner, but a superb butterfly save by Merageas kept it a one-goal contest.
  • The Cardinals grabbed a 2-0 lead with just 1:47 remaining in the middle frame. Ivy Boric latched onto a loose puck in the right circle and blasted a one-timer which found the upper-right corner to double the advantage.
  • Middlebury responded with a goal just over one minute later. Cece Ziegler ripped a bid through traffic that fell to MacQueen just in front of the net. The Panther made no mistake, slipping her backhanded effort past Nease to slice the deficit to one (2-1) heading into the third period.
  • With 3:41 to go, Bridget Orr looked to add another tally for the Cardinals as she received a pass and blasted a one-timer from close-range, but her effort was thwarted by the right pad of Merageas.
  • The Panthers emptied the net for the final 2:21, but were unable to find an equalizer, as Plattsburgh held on for the 2-1 win.
NOTES
  • MacQueen's goal was her second of the season.
  • Middlebury and Plattsburgh faced off for the 42nd time. Earlier this season, the Cardinals claimed a 3-1 victory in the championship game of the Panther/Cardinal Classic.
Middlebury returns to NESCAC play this weekend when it hosts Connecticut College for a two-game series beginning on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
