Men’s Hockey Extends Unbeaten Streak to Three; Ties Bowdoin 2-2

The Middlebury men's hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to 2-0-1 over its last three games with a 2-2 tie against Bowdoin on Saturday evening.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers looked to grab an early edge with 2:41 elapsed. Wyatt Pastor skated into the offensive zone and fired a shot from between the circles that was saved by the stick of Polar Bear netminder Alex Kozic.
  • Bowdoin went on the power-play midway through the opening period, but it was Middlebury that dominated offensive possession. Chris Garbe and Dante Palombo each broke away with one-on-one opportunities, but Kozic stood tall to deny both chances.
  • The Polar Bears took a 1-0 lead at the 13:54 mark, on their second power play of the stanza. Jesse Lycan received a pass at the right point and blasted a shot that nestled over the shoulder of goalie Jake Horoho and into the top right corner.
  • The Panthers opened the second stanza with an extra skater and looked to equalize after only 48 seconds of action. Andrej Hromic slipped a pass to Zach Whitehead who fired a close-range shot from just outside the crease that looked destined to find the twine, but Kozic sprawled to make the save.
  • Middlebury knotted the score at 1-1 with 3:26 expired in the middle frame. Hromic skated behind the net and found Revy Mack in the middle of the left circle. Mack one-timed his effort inside the right post to even the contest.
  • The Panthers continued to apply pressure throughout the second period and took the lead at the 13:31 mark. Mack slipped past a defender on the right side of the zone and centered a pass to Palombo who tapped the puck in on the doorstep to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage.
  • Bowdoin responded with just 56 seconds showing on the clock. Isaac Abbott blasted a shot from the blueline that was stopped by Horoho, but the rebound trickled to Andy Stoneman who deposited it into the net to make it 2-2 heading into the final frame.
  • The third period was a defensive affair. Middlebury's best chance of the stanza came just before the midway point when a tipped effort by Andrew Seaman whistled inches wide of the left pipe.
  • The Polar Bears almost took a late lead with five minutes remaining. Patrick Callahan redirected the puck from close range, but Horoho was equal to the shot and denied the chance to send the teams to overtime.
  • Bowdoin had the best chance of the extra period. After 53 seconds of action, Luke Wheeler drove past two defenders and ripped a shot that rattled the crossbar and ricocheted away as the two teams settled for a 2-2 tie.
NOTES
  • With an assist tonight, Jin Lee has now tallied a point in six of his last eight games.
  • Mack and Palombo each moved to six points on the season with their goals.
  • This is the second time this season that the two squads have gone to overtime with the Polar Bears claiming a 4-3 victory earlier in the year.
  • The programs played for the 95th time with Bowdoin holding a narrow 43-41-11 edge in the all-time series.
Middlebury returns to the ice when it travels to Connecticut College on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
