Middlebury Pulls Away From VTSU-Johnson 80-70

The Middlebury men's basketball team held Vermont State University-Johnson scoreless for 5:09 during the second half as the Panthers pulled away for an 80-70 victory. With the win, Middlebury secured its fourth-straight triumph.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers jumped out to a 9-4 with 3:19 elapsed following a pair of charity tosses from Evan Flaks.
  • The hosts continued to extend their advantage, doubling up the Badgers (16-8) on a three-pointer from Jaden Bobbett after 5:13 of action.
  • VTSU-Johnson chipped away at the deficit, going on a 15-8 run to slice the Middlebury lead to just one (24-23) on a shot from beyond the arc from Nazir Gossette just past the midway point.
  • Trailing 30-27, the Badgers strung together four unanswered points to take a 31-30 lead on a pull-up jumpshot by Mohammed Semega with 5:34 to go in the opening half.
  • Middlebury answered with a 15-3 burst and took its largest lead of the stanza (45-34) with 58 seconds remaining, as Lamine Cisse converted on an old-fashioned three-point play.
  • VTSU-Johnson responded with the final five points of the frame to cut the Panther lead to six (45-39) heading into the halftime break.
  • The teams traded buckets throughout the opening eight minutes of the second half. With just under 13 minutes left, a pair of free throws by Semega and a layup from Gossette brought the Badgers to within two (58-56).
  • That was as close as the visitors would get, as the Panthers exploded on a 10-0 run over the next 5:09 to storm into a 12-point lead (68-56) on a jumpshot by Noah Osher.
  • The hosts maintained their advantage and pushed the advantage to 14 (74-60) on a jumper by Flaks with 5:12 remaining.
  • VTSU-Johnson cut the deficit to nine (79-70) on a dunk by Raymond Baka with 13 seconds to go, but Ian Murray sank a late free throw to give Middlebury the 80-70 triumph.
