The Middlebury men's basketball team moved out to an 18-point second-half lead and held off a late Bowdoin comeback attempt during a 71-67 NESCAC victory on Friday evening. During the win,
Noah Osher scored 23 points, becoming the 27th player in program history to surpass the 1,000-point career total (1,001).
HIGHLIGHTS
- Trailing 5-4 just 3:42 into the opening stanza, an old-fashioned three-point play followed by a shot from beyond the arc by Tristan Joseph gave the Panthers a 10-5 advantage.
- The Polar Bears clawed their way back, grabbing a 16-14 edge on a three by Michael Symonds with 8:11 showing on the clock.
- Down 21-19, Middlebury ended the stanza with a 9-2 spurt over the final 4:03 for a 28-23 edge at the halftime break.
- The visitors came out firing in the second frame, ripping off a 20-7 run capped by a three by Kuba Cwalina with 12:20 left for the 48-30 lead.
- Bowdoin answered with 19 of the ensuing 23 points, cutting the deficit to three (52-49) at the 7:41 mark on a shot from beyond the arc by Alex Halpern.
- The Panthers tried to pull away, securing a 58-52 advantage on a layup from Lamine Cisse just over three minutes later.
- The hosts continued to try and level the contest, pulling to within one (66-65) on a three-point play from Natrel Allen with 1:12 remaining.
- A three from Osher increased the Middlebury lead to four (69-65) with 15 seconds left, but a quick layup by Allen made it a two-point game.
- With the Polar Bears forced to foul and looking to extend the contest, Joseph knocked down the first free throw. Cisse corralled a crucial offensive rebound in the following second and made a charity toss for the final 71-67 score.
NOTES
- Osher finished with a game-high 23 points, marking the fifth-consecutive game he has scored in double figures and the sixth time this season that he has surpassed the 20-point plateau.
- Cisse tied his career high with six rebounds, including the pivotal carom in the final minute.
- David Brennan finished with nearly a double-double of eight points and 10 boards, giving him nine contests this season in which he has tallied a double-digit rebounding total.
- The programs squared off for the 57th time with the Panthers holding a narrow 30-27 edge. Middlebury has won the last nine matchups.
The Panthers continue their road NESCAC weekend on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. game at Colby.
