Volleyball Falls 3-1 in Season Opener at Kean

The Middlebury volleyball team fell 3-1 in its season opener to the Cougars on Friday evening in the first game of the Kean Invitational. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The hosts jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the first set before Middlebury rattled off three-straight points on two kills from Gabbie O'Toole to level the contest at 8-8.
  • With the score knotted at 12-12, the Cougars went on a 5-2 run, highlighted by two kills from Ashley Smith to take a 17-14 edge. 
  • From there, Kean was able to hold off a late rally by the Panthers to claim the first set 25-20.
  • With the score even at 8-8 in the second set, the Panthers went on a 4-2 burst which included a pair of kills by Lexi Linafelter and two aces from Britt Lange to secure a 12-10 advantage.
  • Middlebury recorded four straight points, the Cougars responded with a 10-4 run to tie the stanza at 20 points apiece 
  • The Panthers answered with a 5-1 run, capped by a kill from Ava Tuccio to level the match at 1-1. 
  • In the third set, Kelly Ferraro gave Middlebury a 5-3 lead with three consecutive service aces. 
  • Leading 7-6, the Panthers went on a 6-2 run, highlighted by back-to-back kills from Baxter to take a 13-8 lead.
  • Trailing 21-16, the Cougars rattled off a 9-1 run to claim the third set 25-22 and take a 2-1 lead.
  • Deadlocked  at 13-13 in the fourth set, Kean scored six of the next eight points to take an 18-15 edge.
  • Trailing 20-16, Middlebury tied the set with an 8-4 run, capped by a kill from Katie Kraczkowsky to make it 24-24. 
  • Kean responded, scoring three of the next four points to earn a 27-25 victory in the fourth set, and secure the four-set triumph
NOTES
  • Linafelter (10) and Kraczkowsky (13) each recorded double-digit kills for the Panthers, while Ferraro ended the match with 23 digs.
  • O'Toole finished the match with 38 assists, one off her four-set career-high.
  • This was the first ever meeting between the two programs.
Middlebury will conclude the Kean Invitational with matches against Gettysburg and SUNY Cortland on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
