Women’s Soccer Earns 0-0 Draw With Wesleyan

The Middlebury women's soccer team battled Wesleyan to a 0-0 draw on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers totaled 25 shots, including 14 on target, but strong goalkeeping kept the game level at 0-0.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury nearly opened the scoring at the 10:28 mark. Sophia Cole fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box which sent Cardinal goalie Molly Brumbach diving to her right to push the bid just wide of the post.
  • Less than two minutes later, the Panthers looked to take the lead. Ella Gagnon whipped a cross into the box and Chloe Swindle met it for a one-time volley. Brumbach managed to get a hand to the point-blank effort and tipped it over the crossbar.
  • Wesleyan had its best chance at the 35:23 mark. Audrey Lavey floated a free kick into the 18-yard box from the right side. The ball fell to Waverly Meyers who rifled a close-range shot, but goalie Caroyln Kelley sprawled to her left to deny the bid, and the follow-up effort was blocked by the Middlebury defense.
  • With 2:30 left in the first half, Frankie Getman drove into the penalty area. She cut a pass back to Fanny Lodge who spun away from her defender and fired a shot that skidded just wide of the left pipe, keeping the score knotted at 0-0 heading into the half.
  • The Cardinals looked to break through after seven minutes in the second half. Katie O'Connell sent a through ball to Catherine Gallagher who lashed a one-time shot on frame, but Kelley's quick reaction made the stop.
  • The hosts' best chance of the second half came with 12:04 to go. Mia Feldman's low cross found Lodge on the edge of the six-yard box. Lodge swiveled past her defender and flicked a right-footed shot toward the bottom-right corner, but Brumbach dove to poke the ball around the post.
  • The Panthers continued to threaten late in the match with three quality chances from Abby Ward and Gigi Day coming in the final ten minutes, but Brumbach was equal to the task and held the Middlebury offense at bay to hang on for the 0-0 tie.
NOTES
  • The programs met for the 39th time with the Panthers holding a decisive 27-5-7 advantage in the all-time series.
  • Kelley tallied four saves in goal for Middlebury and registered her first shutout of the season.
The Panthers will travel to Waterville, Maine to take on Colby on Saturday, October 7 at 11:00 a.m.
