The 17th-ranked Middlebury men's soccer team scored 4:14 into Sunday's contest against Bates and never looked back in a 3-0 triumph. With today's victory, the Panthers retain the Hedley Reynolds Cup for the third-consecutive year. The cup is named after Thomas Hedley Reynolds, who served in administrative roles at both institutions.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Middlebury jumped on the scoreboard early in the opening half after a corner kick. Jordan Saint-Louis served the ball just outside the 18-yard box to Gavin Randolph who redirected the pass toward the goal mouth. The ball found the feet of Kyle Nilsson who tapped it under Bates goalie Trevor Hammond for the 1-0 lead.
- The Panthers nearly scored again in the 23rd minute, but a quick one-touch by Randolph rolled just wide of the left post.
- The Bobcats had their best scoring chance of the opening stanza at the 43:47 mark on a free kick. Cesar Hoover bent a shot from 35 yards out that Middlebury goalie Ryan Grady came charging off his line to save and preserve a 1-0 halftime advantage.
- In the 61st minute, Saint-Louis found space behind the Bobcat defense, but Hammond dove to his right and saved a left-footed bid to keep it a one-goal contest.
- The Panthers increased their lead with 18:07 elapsed in the second half. Tyler Payne pounced on a loose ball in the box, slotting his shot into the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.
- Looking to slice into the lead, Bates produced its best opportunity of the second stanza when Hoover raced down the left side. The Bobcat lifted the ball toward Grady, but the Middlebury keeper calmly saved the close-range attempt to keep his shutout intact.
- Payne tallied his second goal of the contest with 7:50 remaining, gathering a bouncing ball and sending it into the lower-left corner from 25 yards for the final 3-0 score.
NOTES
- The two-goal game from Payne was the first of his career.
- Grady finished with seven saves, including six in the second half, for his 32nd career clean sheet.
- The programs met for the 43rd time with the Panthers holding a 32-8-3 edge.
- The win marks the third-straight season that Middlebury has defeated the Bobcats by identical 3-0 scores.
The Panthers continue their four-game homestand on Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. match against Wesleyan.
