Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#14 Women’s Soccer Edged By Hamilton 2-1

The 14th-ranked Middlebury women's soccer team was edged by a 2-1 score on Saturday at Hamilton.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers controlled much of the opening half with a strong wind at their back.
  • Following a Middlebury corner kick, the Continentals quickly countered. Erin Rayhill raced down the right sideline and ripped a shot into the upper-right corner just past the fingers of Panther goalie Livia Davidson with 34:40 left for a 1-0 lead.
  • Middlebury produced a trio of solid scoring chances over the next 20 minutes. The best opportunity came with 15 minutes remaining on a left-footed shot from 30 yards by Chloe Swindle that was saved by Nieve Tonna.
  • The Continentals nearly took a 2-0 lead in the 35th minute, but Davidson charged off her line to thwart a through ball by Rayhill.
  • Middlebury's Fanny Lodge almost leveled the match with a minute remaining in the opening half, but Tonna came off her line and forced Lodge's shot wide of the right post to preserve the 1-0 Hamilton lead at the break.
  • The Panthers continued to apply pressure in the offensive end during the early stages of the second half, including a shot from Baldwin Gittens on the edge of the box sailed wide of the right post with five minutes elapsed.
  • The Continentals increased their lead to 2-0 three minutes later when Daisy Sullivan collected a loose ball and one-touched a left-footed shot into the back of the net.
  • Middlebury nearly got on the scoreboard with 21 minutes remaining, but a sharp-angled shot from the left by Ella Gagnon was saved by the right leg of Tonna.
  • The Panthers pulled to within one (2-1) with 15:37 showing on the clock. Joely Virzi blasted a penalty kick into the left panel for her team-leading third goal of the season.
  • Middlebury looked to equalize in the waning minutes of the match, but the Continental defense held strong for the final 2-1 score.
