The 14th-ranked Middlebury women's soccer team trailed 1-0 late in Sunday's contest with Clarkson until
Gigi Day leveled the match, recording her first collegiate goal with 1:13 remaining to earn a 1-1 draw.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers applied pressure in the early stages of the opening half. In the fourth minute, Hunter Furman dribbled down the right side, sending a long-distance shot that was saved by Golden Knight goalie Molly DiCaprio.
- Clarkson had its best chance of the initial half with 10 minutes elapsed as Maddie Lopol blasted a knuckling strike that was saved by Middlebury keeper Livia Davidson.
- The Panthers produced another quality chance with 11:18 left before the halftime break. After a failed clearance by the hosts, Ella Gagnon collected the loose ball and sent a shot toward DiCaprio that the Golden Knight goalie saved falling to the ground to send the match scoreless into the intermission.
- Five minutes into the second half, Clarkson earned back-to-back corner kicks. On the second chance, Davidson made a diving save on a quick shot inside the box from Emily Davis.
- Middlebury quickly countered, pushing the ball up the field. A cross found the feet of Fanny Lodge who sent a bid toward the lower-left corner but DiCaprio sprawled to her right to make the save.
- The Golden Knights had a great opportunity to score with 10:07 remaining, but Davidson saved a header by Emma Robinson to keep the contest deadlocked.
- Clarkson tallied its goal with 6:09 left following a free kick. The attempt was sent into the box and bounced around before Callie Abel poked the loose ball into the lower-left corner for the 1-0 advantage.
- The Panthers nearly evened the match with 1:40 remaining, but Roshann Purcell's shot was denied by a Golden Knight defender just before the ball crossed the goal line.
- Middlebury pressed and earned a free kick in the ensuing seconds. Purcell sent an arching cross into the box that Day redirected with her right foot just inside the near post with 1:13 showing on the clock to tie the contest at 1-1.
- Neither side maintained possession over the final minute to result in a 1-1 draw.
NOTES
- Davidson finished with a career-high five saves.
- The assist by Purcell was the first of her career.
- Clarkson received votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches national poll.
- Over the last seven seasons, Middlebury is 34-13-3 away from Allan Dragone Field.
- Sunday's contest was just the second meeting between the programs, as the Panthers claimed a 2-0 decision in 2022.
Middlebury returns to action on Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. home kickoff against Vermont State University Castleton.
