#21 Men’s Soccer Pulls Away From Hamilton 4-1

The 21st-ranked Middlebury men's soccer team fired in three goals in the first 27 minutes of the match to pull away from Hamilton by a score of 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers looked to strike first after 1:26 of action. Gavin Randolph rifled a one-time shot from close-range that was smothered by Continental goalie Kai Haesslein.
  • Hamilton applied the pressure over the next three minutes. Luke Peplowski forced goalkeeper Ryan Grady into two fine saves, before Julian Jacobs rang the post with a powerful effort at the 8:29 mark.
  • Middlebury broke the deadlock with 10:25 elapsed. Will Sawin cut past a defender on the left flank before crossing the ball to Shane Farrell who headed it into the net at the back post for a 1-0 lead.
  • Less than seven minutes later, the Panthers doubled their advantage. Randolph drove through the heart of the Continental defense and slipped a ball across the 18-yard box for Kyle Nilsson, who calmly slotted his shot into the bottom left corner to make it 2-0.
  • Hamilton immediately responded with a goal at the 21:42 mark. Charles Hawthorn received a pass from Luke Peplowski and knocked his shot into the net to halve the deficit (2-1).
  • The flurry of first half goals continued as Middlebury bagged its third tally of the match with 17:54 left on the clock. Jay Hoke whipped a corner kick into the box and Luke Madden tapped the loose ball in at the far post to regain the Panthers' two-goal edge (3-1) at the half.
  • The Continentals looked for a way back into the game. In the 57th minute Pandelis Margaronis fired a right-footed shot from long distance that forced Grady into a diving save to his left to tip the ball wide of the post.
  • Just one minute later, Jude Rouhana kept the pressure on, blasting a left-footed shot from the top of the box that was thwarted by Grady.
  • Middlebury struck for a fourth time with 11:09 remaining in the contest. Colin Dugan intercepted a clearing attempt and fired a shot past Haesslein and into the lower-right corner to seal the victory.
  • Hamilton continued to push for another goal, but Grady would not be beaten, denying multiple bids to secure the 4-1 triumph.
NOTES
  • Grady recorded nine saves during the victory which is the second-most in his career.
  • The programs faced off for the 18th time. The Panthers lead the all-time series 14-3-1, and have won six of the last seven meetings.
